Mineral's Story.
The family who own Mineral originally had a male doodle that suddenly and mysteriously died from unknown causes at the age of two. Mineral and his female littermate were "replacement" dogs from the breeder in Oregon. Mineral is currently living with three young children he absolutely ADORES....but he is being rehomed because he has bitten 3 people -( all men, all strangers) and his family are concerned that he has behavioral issues and they will be forced to have him put down. I feel it is something that can be corrected with the proper home...His family admits they do not take a strong alpha role with their dogs.........It was very obvious when I went to visit that this was indeed the case....Blake and I went to see and evaluate Mineral on Weds. Here is what I observed:
Mineral was muzzled when I got there but I purposely approached him with tremendous assertiveness to see his reaction to a new stranger expecting him to bark and lunge at me...To my surprise, he happily approached Blake and I, tail raised high and wagging gave us a few sniffs and immediately came over to me, sat next to me and put his paw on my leg....When I knelt down to pat him he gave me a big doodle hug, licked my face and rested his head on my shoulder....He is an absolute sweetie pie!....
When we went in the house, I sat down on the couch and Mineral jumped up next to me, layed down and placed his head in my lap tail wagging.....(Blake was too busy raiding Mineral's toy basket to be jealous..lol..)
As soon as his owner let his littermate in the room, the dynamic seemed to change a bit....Mineral became even more submissive and a little wary while his female littermate was quite assertive....The three doodles played together very nicely for awhile while I spoke to Mineral's owner....We then put the female in another room and I proceeded to do everything in my power to induce an aggressive or fearful reaction from this dog including:
Staring at him face to face ( he turned away every time and then wagged his tail, licked me with his tail and ears lowered submissively)......He was the perfect gentleman!
I touched every part of his body including his paws, face and mouth...which I actually opened and put my fingers inside to see if I got a reaction....The reaction was as before-accommodating, submissive and again resulted in tail and ears lowered and approval seeking licks....Sweetie mush!
I forcefully held him so that he could not move and held his mouth closed with my hand...He wiggled for few moments and then completely submitted again with the lowered tail and ears and licks. I then rolled him over on his back and held him there.....He maintained a totally submissive posture, licking my face when I allowed him to rise....He was such a good boy!
I then had his owner bring out his littermate, place food in their bowls ( Blake had some too..) and I proceeded to pet him and shove my hands in his bowl....He totally backed off and let me take it from him again displaying a submissive posture. There were no growls...no resource guarding displays...
All in all, by the end of our two hour visit, I saw nothing that made me think that he is an aggressive, dangerous dog.....I DID see that he is NOT a confident dog in the presence of his littermate and that is of concern as it could possibly indicate he's somewhat unpredictable...but AGAIN...I think in the right home with assertive leadership, Mineral would be a wonderful, normal, well behaved dog with no issues!.....I believe that when he bit those 3 men, it was out of fear... not aggression and he was protecting and guarding the children .....Apparently, at the time of each biting incident, Mineral was leashed in the presence of his littermate and with one or all of the three children of the household...He has NEVER bitten a family member..
It's my opinion that he absolutely SHOULD NOT BE DESTROYED!....He either needs to be the only dog in the household or with a confident, calm companion dog, in a dog experienced home with a person or persons who have older teen children or no children and who will be willing to take an assertive, strong, alpha role with him while showering him with love and affection, build his confidence and security and have patience. FYI- Mineral has seen an animal behaviorist and vet who feel the same way but they have placed him on medication as a precaution while he is still in his current home. Mineral's owners are WILLING TO PAY TO HAVE HIM SHIPPED wherever he can be guaranteed a wonderful, forever home!
Please email me at jacaloo2@yahoo.com if you are interested in saving Mineral's life and can provide him with a special home.....You must be willing to be a responsible dog owner in regards to his potential behavior issues....
Thank You
