Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Well, last night she slept like a dream in her wire crate! Turns out she is very intrigued by carrots! And the fact that she was probably dead tired by night. However, now I have a new issue. It's day 3 and she still isnt eating! She eats carrots, but she wont touch her dry food, and I know she eats the dry food because its what my breeder gave me! For the sake of her eating I cooked her a piece of chicken and she ate it, but she wont eat the dry food! I dont understand why?? Is she still too stresses...even though she eats raw foods?? Thanks

Ya I definitely made the mistake of introducing too any foods at once, I just saw some girl fed her 8 week goldendoodle a raw meal consisting of all sorts of stuff so I assumed it was ok. Anywho, i thought I'd give the kibble a try this morning, but instead of feeding the kirkland (what my breeder sent me home with) I just gave her all Innova (I tried the transition before but she wouldn't touch it, so maybe she just doesnt like the kirkland). She did eat it though! Not much but it was better than nothing!
Yipppeeee! Innova is a great food! Just keep giving her that, small amounts a few times a day! Good job!
Ya, I absolutely refuse to feed anything of lower quality. I wanted the Acana or Orijin but I was a little scared it was too rich for a young puppy, so I'm trying the Innova first and then moving up to the Orijen. I'm glad she likes it though! Is it normal for them to take a few bites and then not be hungry anymore?
Some dogs are just grazers; all of my dogs have had a habit of taking a mouthful of food, walking across the room to eat it, leaving some on the floor, walk around, take another mouthful...lol!
It helps sometimes if you sit down near them and eat your own meal when you feed them.
Ya she likes eating out of my hand more so than a bowl! haha. Hey whatever gets her to eat right??
I hand fed mine when she was a little puppy, because she was not a big eater. I ended up using her kibble to teach her sit, down etc....while feeding.
I think it is good for bonding, too.
Halas eats Innova Evo and Orijen, and I'd say he needs less of the Evo to feel full. So, even at almost 2 years old, a smaller portion of Evo fills Halas up. That's great that she's eating. Like you said, eating something is better than nothing, even if it still doesn't seem like quite enough. She'll get there. And like some others have mentioned, yogurt works for us, too. If I ever feel like Halas hasn't eaten quite enough, I'll put a spoonful of plain yogurt on his kibble, and he'll usually eat the yogurt and the kibble.
Gongratulation on your new puppy...sounds like you are trying to be a really good mom. You have been given some really good advice. My dog got into liver and it really scared me...I fed her rice and pumkin a couple of days and she had no issues from eating the liver.... she had not eat anything but dog food up to this time.
Oh thats good! Ya, my puppy has had no loose stools or an upset tummy at all, even with her trying all sorts of different kinds of foods. I gave her some Innova this morning instead of her usual Kirkland nd she liked it! So maybe I can get her to JUST eat that! haha
Gosh - I feel for ya!

Max and I went through this the first three months. I tried everything under the sun or so it seemed. We went through at least 15 different 5 and 6 star no grain kibble of different sizes and textures, BARF, homecooked, eventually back to weaning kibble and "formula". I moistened it, mixed it with cooked chicken, rice, cottage cheese, broth...etc.

I put down the kibble for 20 minutes making him work for it - I tried smart toys..etc...

You get where I'm going with this. :)

One day - I withheld food for the day and come early evening put down the food the only kibble he would eat - Royal Canin - which he was given when weaned. That kicked in his realization that food was important and not always there. That worked for some time but as he grew, he decided he didn't care enough. Again one day somewhere between 3-4 months of age - I had enough and put down half his portion down in the morning and half in the afternoon. I free fed him and let him eat whenever he wanted because I just didn't have the energy anymore to worry about when he ate. Well - it worked. He eats his portion every day. Some days he eats it rather quickly and others - most - he grazes.

The only treats he'll eat are chicken jerkey, dried yams and a little plain greek yogurt. He may eat another treat here and there but, it doesn't excite him. He LOVES cooked chicken but, it upsets his tummy, these days, and he easily gets spoiled if I stray from his regular kibble.

The vet has confirmed what other have said. Some are grazers and some are gobblers. Many are just not food oriented. Max will even turn down chicken if he isn't hungry and that is his million dollar treat.

I'm kind of jealous - LOL.

You may just have to try different things. I know it's frustarting because most of us envision puppies who will eat you out of house and home but, that isn't every puppy. I was also frustrated because I didn't want him to eat a kibble that wasn't top notch but, ultimately it's what he would eat. I'll try again in the future but, life is too short to sit around stressed over dog food - IMO anyway.
