Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi Everybody,

I'm new to the forum, so sorry if this has been covered already.  I just joined and am trying to learn as quickly as I can.  Can dogs have issues with their vaccines?  One of my dogs will never look me in the eye, and I was wondering, can his vaccines cause autism?  I've gone to a trainer, but she was useless.  What do you guys think?

You say "When I tell him to come and he doesn't", Have you taught him to come? They don't automatically know those things. We are still working on a CONSISTANT come and ours are 2 years old. Tail wagging is happy .... it's a game to him. He is getting you to play! Bringing the toy and growling ..... he wants to play. Our dogs do this to each other all the time .... it means chase me! You are right, you do need a good trainer, one who has a loving approach! None of your signs point to a mean dominate dog that requires a hard core approach. Maybe at night when you put him to bed and you pet him you might try "I love you"
" I love you" "I love you" instead.
I definitely think a good trainer can help with this as others have said. Make sure the trainer is a member of the Assoc. of Pet Dog Trainers and even someone who an authorized Canine Good Citizen evaluator. My particular trainer has a psychology degree with an emphasis in behavior modification and animal learning (I know - does that even exist!!??). But you should just see what behavioral issues I have seen her modify first-hand. In one of our classes, a family brought their rescue mini pin, who had some serious issues - she didn't trust anyone enough to even lay down. Within the first class, our trainer had lured her down using some amazing techniques! I really think a good trainer can help you completely. Good luck.
actually I believe there is a test. My niece has been tested for everything on the planet and I do remember that her parents said there were some DNA markers and a neurological test done to determine she didnt have autism.
now I could be very wrong because I was not directly involved~
I am not aware of any DNA markers or specific tests except for ruling out other diseases. The diagnosis is usually made by psychiatric or neurological evaluation.
I'd wager that 'autism' is simply not on the list of veterinary diagnoses PERIOD. Is there a DSM book for vets? If there is...I highly doubt 'autism' is among the list of possible canine conditions. It is a human condition based on what is "normal" for humans. Temple Grandin, famous person with autism, speaks a lot on how her autism has helped her understand animals. So...if anything ALL dogs are more like autistic people than like 'normal' people.... But no one dog has 'autism.' Thus he won't find a vet or behaviorist who can or will diagnose this in his dog.
I am a practicing professional who deals with evaluating people. I often tell them that "labeling" people is good for insurance purposes mainly. The main issue is whether there is a problem and what do I need to do to fix it. Autism in people is mainly diagnosed by behavioral observations, and relatedness to other people. I think wondering if dogs can have autism is besides the point. If your dog has behavioral issues or you perceive problems in the relationship between you and your dog you need to work on these issues. Other people in this discussion have suggested ways to work on these issues most particularly by training your dog and using the help of a good trainer if needed. Do you like/love your dog?
Well guys, thanks for all your input on this situation, but it has a sad ending. Two nights ago my son was practicing a "Dominance Stare" with Popito and he snapped and actually drew blood on my sons face. I loved my dog, but of course my child comes first, and I had to put Popito down. I blame the vaccinations for all of this, and will continue to look for an answer. There is some good news though. This weekend we're going to look for a puppy! I will continue to be on the forum of course, and I look forward to all your advice with my puppy.

I feel ill right now that you chose to put your dog down when your son was purposely antagonizing him. Maybe your son should learn how to act around dogs and what is good behavior when dealing with an animal. I hope you do not get another dog or puppy ever. You are way off base about dog behavior, etc. and I feel sorry for your animals.
This guy was obviously a troll trying to get a rise out of us dog loving doodle folks. He's no longer a member here.
