Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi Doodle Experts! I am hoping you have some insight on an issue we are having with Rooster- our sweet 5 month old F1 goldendoodle. He is mostly potty trained- but in the last few weeks, we have noticed that he is peeing while he walks! He isn't stopping at all, so it makes these long swirling lines across the carpet- not fun to clean up!! We find drips in the kitchen and across rooms- like he is leaking??? When I scold him, he sulks- but I am not that hard on him because it really seems like he can't control it?? He KNOWS to go outside- We just recently had a loose stool issue and took him to the vet last week- nothing was discovered- and we just took a urine sample in on Saturday but are still awaiting results. Any ideas???

Is he on any medication right now?

He is on that medicine that I read you don't like from another post!!  I don't have it with me because I'm at work- but was prescribed for loose stools.  He only has one dose left, but the peeing and walking started after the neuter but before this sickness...

Well, the med is metronidazole, and it's an antibiotic that should not be used casually for diarrhea without any confirmed infection, as it can have ongoing side-effects. It's really, really important that you start him on a good probiotic like Proviable DC for a few weeks, or the diarrhea is going to come right back when the meds are discontinued.

But if the peeing & dribbling while walking started after the neuter, it sounds like they could be related.

I will order the Proviable DC right away- do you think he could have been damaged in some way with the neuter??? Do I need to bring this up with the vet? I love this sweet boy SO much!

It's something I would definitely discuss with the vet if you haven't already. Did you just drop off a urine sample without talking to the vet about what was going on? If so, and no infection is found, I'd definitely discuss it.

Standard neuter surgery on a dog with both testicles descended is pretty noninvasive, but I really don't know what kinds of complications might be possible. It would be quite a coincidence for urinary issues to have just happened to develop right after neuter surgery if there is no connection, though.

We did discuss with vet- and he requested we bring by a urine sample if the issue persisted.  Then we were told results could take 5-10 days :(

It is just so weird!  He is GREAT with going potty outside!

I doubt that the surgery caused this problem.

In the meantime you could try to put a belly band on him. If he can't control it and he's already potty trained, it's probably very confusing for him.

Good idea, Becka!  It would give Samara peace of mind that the carpet is not getting wet and Rooster can relax and not be confused.  Be sure to take it off when he is outside!!  :)

Thank you both! That is a good idea- he looks so sad when we get upset about it- but it is hard not to get upset when you have to follow a trail of pee across the carpet in figure 8's!

That is what I was going to suggest too. The belly band could be helpful and build his confidence back up if he's a little confused as to why he can't control it.

Does he only do this when he actually HAS to go?  The reason I ask is that Guinness has always peed while walking....but once housebroken never in the house.  He knows to hold it inside, but when he's out it's a different story.  It is really very strange and there is nothing actually wrong with him.  We talked to the Vet and everything was fine with his urine.  We will be out on a walk and I'll look and there is a trail of urine....and he acts like he's oblivious to it.  He doesn't do this every time, but it does happen several times a week.  I would really focus on the housebreaking....he may never stop this but at least it won't be inside the house.  Hoping the urine sample comes back clear.  I'll be really curious so please let us know what you find out.
