I've debated about putting this out there but we have our own thoughts about why this happens.

This picture contains the ( remains ) urn's of Bella, my husbands dog of 18 years and Pete, my dog of 14 years. They are placed together on the bookcase shelf in the living room.

Spud will just sit and bark at them. " Bark Bark Bark Bark Bark" What are your thoughts?

Do they think there are treats in there? Otherwise, I guess the remains are speaking to them, LOL
Wow, good idea. I never thought about treats. Treats for Spud come out of the refrigerator in a Ziplock baggie.

I am sure your dogs do this too--they have a distinct park which contain different tones and fluctuations. Each type of bark means something different. For example; someones at the door, give me a cookie, play bark, or my ball is under the couch-help.

He gives the 'ball is under the couch stuck' bark.
You know Joanne, this is completely my own thougth that makes ME feel better by thinking this way.
We have an urn that contains our beloved cat "Chocolate Chips", and Butter - although Chocolate Chips hated him - will sit in front of it nice and tall, very respectfully. I always say that he is paying respect for her. He really looks that way. There are no other time when he would look straight at something and sit still like that. I don't know what he knows. But he sure looks like he knows that's Chocolate Chips in there....
Kyoko, thank you. It is good to know someone else thinks there may be something to this.
Some people believe that everything in this universe is connected and animals are able to see the line between the seen and the unseen better than we can. Who knows if there is any non-verbal connection, but it is neat to think about. OR...they just think they are treat tins like Sue said!
The way he acts--I think he knows.
YEP! I think he definitely knows. Dogs have that SIXTH SENSE - you know! Why would he just focus on those two tins and nothing else in the room??? Yep - he knows! (and they know too)
I have no idea. I was thinking it might have something to do with the way the light reflects off of them. And a lot of them will bark at an unfamiliar or new object in the house; but I'm assuming these have been where they are for a while.
But these other ideas are more poetic, so I'll vote on the side of the spiritual, too.
Yes. I say theraputic, too! :-)
I will try a test for you guys. My dog, Chrystal's ashes are in my storage room. I will bring them out and sit them on my desk and see what happens.
Lynne, thank you. It may take a few weeks. This seemed to come all of the sudden but he has been persistent. If I give him something else to do, he does what he has to do and then comes right back to the urns. Dunno?
Lynne, I will move the Urns and see if he reacts the same way. Test 2. Maybe I will get a control group with no ashes and see if he reacts this tin. Whoa--Scientific Testing! :) We can publish and be famous.

But this is a great idea. Moving them now and I will let you all know.
