I love the warmth of electric blankets (when I slide into a pre-heated bed - I feel like God is giving me a goodnight hug...its the best)

And I know that its a big cost saver to put the heat down at night.

So I was thinking of getting everyone - electric blankets this winter and turn down the heat.

But this winter - we have Buck who sleeps in his crate downstairs in the living room.

I want to lower the temp as much as I can - but at the same time - be comfortable for Buck

What temperature do you'all set the thermometer at?

(Buck is one of those dogs that won't sleep on a doggie bed - but prefers the floor and sleeps on vents - so I assume that he runs hot.  But his coat isn't that full.)

Our thermostat is set at 55 for night time. I have hot dogs, too. They are always seeking out cool floors.

wow 55 degrees?

And your dogs are fine - sleeping on a cold floor?

how does one know - if your dog is cold?

Sometimes I do see him - all curled up - instead of his usual sprawl.

does this mean - he is trying to retain heat? (so maybe he is alittle cold?)

Do you use an electric blanket?  it must be kinda cold for a human? no?

The dogs could relocate to a dog bed or rug or something if they were cold. I keep my heat at about 58 at night, no electric blanket.
Sometimes Kona will lay on his big dog bed, but Owen prefers the crate floor. We have wool comforters, like down, only wool batting. We also sleep with the window open but it doesn't usually get to freezing here.
It GETS to 55 at night?  that sounds so cold.  I don't think we allow the temp below 68 in the winter.
I'm with you Adina.  I hate getting up in the night and being cold.  We usually keep it at 68 - 70 in the Winter.

I have seen a heating pad for dogs. I have one actually. Echo's crate sits on top of a rug and I slide the pad in between the bottom of the crate and the rug. The heating pad is about the size of a dinner plate and he has a 48" crate so I put it at one end, if he needs to get off of it he can move to the other side of the crate. I was concerned about the pad getting too hot so I sat with it under my feet for about 4 hours. I could barely feel the heat but it would be enough to keep Echo warm if chilled.

I think it's called HeatSafe. I got it at PetSmart.

that is interesting.  So - did you notice that Echo tends to sleep on the heated side- or the unheated side?

Does the pad have different heat settings?

is it expensive?

I think it was about $65. He tends to move around a lot. I think it gets used but his crate has 2 base board heaters nearby and a crate cover so he keeps warm enough. We live above 7000 ft elevation so it can get a little cold here in the winters.
We always turn the heat to 58 at night, Daisy still does the doodle pose all sprawled out....I can honestly say, a dog that lays in the snow and refuses to get up and come in for at least 15 minutes is not getting cold in her windless, snowless bed.

thanks everyone.

the weather was starting to get a little chilly at night and we started using our heavier blankets

But then - I was worried about Buck.

As always - I feel so much better and feel more informed after I consult with you'all.

Cool??? What is that?  We are still in the high heat of summer.  There is NO 55 degree temps at our house except perhaps on a winter at night.
