I would like to know what the right thing to do is when Yankee humps another dog. He is not normally a humper. We can go to the dog park and there will be fifty dogs around and most times there is no problem.
But other times he picks a particular dog and becomes obsessed with humping it. It can be male or female and they are fixed and so is Yankee. He just won't stop. He will follow that dog all over and keep trying. I can pull him off but he goes right back. Normally he listens very well but when this happens, all bets are off. I have leashed him and left. That doesn't seem to deter him. He seems totally obsessed or possessed. It's embarassing.
My trainer said it is more a sign of general excitement than anything else, she suggests separating the dogs and reprimanding the humper with a firm 'no' . The doggie day care I go to uses a spray bottle to stop humping and if it continues they put the humper in another room for 5 minutes or so
