For some random reason Clark is looking at photos of Maine Coon cats on his computer right now.  No we're not getting a cat any time soon.  But I am curious about breeds with cats.  I understand buying dogs from a breeder, but is there any reason to buy a cat from a breeder vs. adopting a random cute cat from the pound?  Do pure breed cats have a slew of health issues depending on breed?  Are cat breeders as likely to be BYBs as dog breeders or is the climate different in catdom?  What knowledge or insight do my doodle peeps have on this topic?

I've never had a Maine Coon, but a friend has had 2.  Very dog-like and so good and mellow with her grand baby. Big though.  Really big!!

My British Blue Shorthair, Mario,  looked similar to this boy.  They do come in other colors though. I had blue cats because my nickname was Blu.  Just some fluke I suppose.
Rosemary, these cats truly can not jump.  The were bred to be ground hunters.  Short legs, heavy strong bodies.  The males have huge heads. Slow as hell and mellow.
He was darker than the full portrait shown below like this button photo.
Once again: DK teaches me something! I did not know this about Russian Blues!

Opps, the British dont jump well.

They call them potatoes on toothpicks.  Short legs, fat, heavy, slow... real slow.

Russians were an off-spring from Siamese and they can really jump. Like to be high up.  They are long and lean. Fast

J, my friend has one named Blueberry…just like this.  He is mellow and funny.

Awes, Blueberry :)
I think Adina should get a big fat British Shorthair. Perfect personality.

Russian Blues

Wow, you know what's strange is I was just looking at the winners from 2011-2013 to post a photo and the look is so different now.  Breeds do change.

What's kind of odd was that Alekzandr didnt seem to shed.

Looks wise here is what I like from Googling cat breeds:

Bengal

Egyptian Mau

Savannah cat (which I guess is a hybrid) and sounds nice except it can jump HIGH.

Toyger

Ocicat -- I saw a show about them once.  They seemed like really cool cats with dog-like qualities.

Bengals are stunning! My son owns two.
Look at American Shorthair too. At first, you might think a tabby, but not so. In person they are stunning and have a unique coat.
Look close because they are almost always in TV ads. Nice personality. You might want to go to a Cat Show. They welcome the public usually for a small fee and you can go from crate to crate, see the cats, and talk with breeders. Maybe even watch a few judging rings.
It's interesting and different than dog shows in many ways.

Here is a link to shows in your area

Adina:  Here are my sons two Bengals.  Beautiful and short haired.  But they are very active cats!  Love to climb and perch up high.  More than once is has come home to find one or the other on the top of a door!  Just sitting there!
