Our six month old little girl got spayed today.  I am picking her up from the vet this afternoon and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to expect / do for her over the next 24 hours?  2 days?  week?  How long does it take to completely heal?

She is a pretty exuberant girl, not sure how I am going to keep her calm for the next few days.

My girl gets spayed this Wednesday :-( part of me is sad for her, part is scared and part of me is ready for it to be over with, ha!
There was another doodle mommy JUST talking about her baby getting spayed last week...let me go find the discussion and I'll share that link :-)

Dopey for the rest of the day. Ah, it was a peaceful day for us. The next day was nearly normal with some extra sleeping involved. Day 3, it was difficult to keep him calm. Echo just wanted to play and run and jump.

Of course, it is different for girls, but it will basically be the same.  Just keep an eye on her incision if it gets really swollen and red take her back to the doctor.

She will probably 'act' healed by the next day for sure.  So your main job will be to keep her from running and jumping...tough with a pup!
Our girls both spent the night at the vets office when they were spayed and we picked them up the next day.  The were quiet and slept quite a bit that day.  Sophie unfortunately came home with a UTI that we quickly discovered when she would just lay on her bed and pee without even realizing she was doing it as she was very housebroken by then.  We got some antibiotics and she was all better quickly.  I personally think the girls were easier than the foster boys I've had to get neutered.  I didn't have to put collars on my girls, but all the boys had to wear their collars all the time or they would go after their stitches.  Just keep an eye on her, keep her comfortable, don't let her get too excited or run and jump too much for several days.  They will probably tell you quiet and no running and jumping or bath for like 10-14 days.  Seems very unrealistic about day 3 when things are pretty much back to normal.  Keep an eye on the stitches at that point to make sure she doesn't pop them.  Don't feed her much tonight or even tomorrow until you judge how her tummy is feeling.  Good Luck.  I'm sure she will be fine.
My girl went for her stitches every time I took the collar off of her!!
thanks everyone.
My puppy Mulligan's vet is having hand surgery so we had to reschedule her spaying with another vet in town.  I don't feel good about it since that vet doesn't even know Mulligan.  I am also getting her microchiped.  I am freaking out, but like Lindsey part or me is sad, part of me is scared and part of me just can't wait to get it over with........

I'm sure the other vet will be perfectly fine!! Spay surgeries are very routine. Microchips are no big deal at all, just an injection under the skin. No worries!!

Get some chews, marrow bones, tasty kongs to distract her from too much play.  you can put a shirt on her instead of the cone to keep her from licking... You will be glad it's over!!  The vet should also prescribe a pain med which will help keep her calm...  keep us posted!

Sasha was spayed at 6 months. When the vet brought her to me, he expained what I should do and gave me meds. etc. Sasha pulled me out of the vets office with such strenght you would of never thought she just had surgery that morning, she could not wait to get home. As soon as we got home I kept her on a leash and walked her around the back yard so she could do her business. I did not feed her and she slept all night. The next day she was back to normal by the afternoon, as the hours passed and the meds wore off she was fine. Its difficult to keep them quite and not running around for 2 wks. after surgery, is what the vet's instructions were. After a week I let her run around but limited her exercise some what. Sasha is a VERY ACTIVE girl who loves to run, jump, play fetch, etc. etc. She is the best a catching a frizzbe 6 fth off the ground so I hid the frizzbe while she was on limited movement. I was told not to let them move around too much even though they seem ok you do not want the healing inside and out to be compromised. Good luck and keep us posted.
How is your doodle baby doing?!

Our doodle girl is doing pretty good.  There was some whimpering type noises last evening but after her pain medication kicked in she seemed just fine.  My biggest concern is how to keep her occupied and relatively clean.  She absolutely loves being outside but our yard is still under construction and a pretty dirty place.   Last night she constantly rang her bell to go outside even though we had to keep telling her she couldn't go.  Finally I sat on the deck with her for a half hour before I made her come back in.  To top it off we have had rain today and forecast for a couple more.   She loves being a dirty dood but I'm guessing that is out of the question.

We can keep her occupied with something like a bully stick but she is an avid chewer and can get through a braided bully stick in less than an hour.  At $11.50 a stick I'm not sure I can afford enough to keep her occupied for a day let alone two weeks!  And since the vet said to keep her cone on when we could not give her our complete attention it makes it hard for her to chew anything like her kongs.  Any suggestions are appreciated...

Here she is with her cone, not happy!
