My puppy, Ebony, is 10 weeks old. How old should she be before installing the invisible fence and how long doe it take to train her to stay in the yard?
I would say as soon as possible, to get her used to the idea. Frankly, they don't tend to stray too far from you when they're young, but at 4 or 5 months they start to explore.
The people that install the fence will help with some of the training, and they will leave flags up around the yard so the dog knows where the fence is. We left our flags up for a long time, and then started taking a few out. We still have one or two up, four years later, in strategic places, just as a reminder.
the "people that install the fence will help with some of the training," BUT that come at quite a high price. About $1,800+ I've heard.
Innotek makes a great system - the Innotek 5100. I bought it on e-bay for about $300. My husband rented a trencher for $50 and installed it himself. They have a very good help line - with immediate help anytime we called. I highly recommend the Innotek 5100. Doodles learn so fast you won't need the guy to come and help you. With this system you get a handheld trainer for training when you are away - like when you're on a walk on a trail or anytime you really want a good recall. This is what they use on hunting dogs and it works wonderful. I do recommend as Mary Beth said to do it as soon as you can.
I have a Labradoodle and a Goldendoodle. Sadie my Labradoodle was trained at 6 months and it only took about 2 days. Sara, the Goldendoodle I got when Sadie was 1 and I trained her at 8 weeks and she learned immediately following her big sisters lead.
I also had a Shar Pei for 10 years with her and it worked like a charm with her also. I lived off of a busy highway, 50 miles per hour and I couldn't keep dogs if I didn't have it. We have about 2 acres set up for them to play and romp in. Their favorite pastime is barking at the cows when they move around in the field.
