Apparently, according to PetPlan animals may need certain documents when crossing state lines I can't imagine this is enforced all that often but read all about it. One woman was fined $700 for a rescue dog.

Wow F, I never have heard of that. Finnley travels with us to Maine regularly. That trip takes us through Vermont, and New Hampshire. Guess it is a good idea to always have your papers anyway.... you know, just in case there is a problem, but never thought I could get fined for it. !
F, your comments aren't showing up again. The one in the training group, either.
Damn, just wrote a long reply. Any way I will put a rabies vaccination record in the car and that's that.
I was reading the laws for Illinois, and it seems very clear to me that the laws are meant to apply to animals that are being brought in for sale of some kind, whether it's cattle for breeding or slaughter, or dogs and cats being brought to pet stores to be sold. There was no language that seemed to pertain to someone going across state lines for the weekend with their dog in their car.
In the case of the Wisconsin rescue lady, I believe it was a transport vehicle carrying a lot of dogs from kill shelters in the deep South. Not one dog in a car with an owner or foster.
Still, I guess it's good to know. I always have JD's proof of rabies vaccination & county tag number with me in the car, as the information is required for the parking permit at the dog parks we visit.
But for those who live close to a state border and go back and forth visiting, it seems ridiculous that you would be required to go to the vet every month.
And I do live near the border and do cross it with the dogs. I suspect these laws are rarely enforced. But I will try to remember to copy the vaccination records and keep them in the car. As to the vet certificate, it's not going to happen even if NY requires such a thing.
You've got that right Karen, you know, about visiting the vet every month. I'll bring the records I have, as well as the vets phone number. Let them call and check it out ! :)
If your pet is traveling a cross state lines it is a good idea to have a Interstate health certificate. DRC, Inc has to do this when we are transporting rescues from one state to another. Your vet can issue the health certificate which confirms that the dog is up to date on vaccines and in good health. The ones I have gotten from my vet expire after 30 days.
So not so handy if you live a few miles from a state border and cross it regularly like I do.
We always had to have the certificate of health when we would fly with our toy poodle, but I didn't realize they needed something to cross the state line in a car. I do always travel with their shot records though. I'll have to look into this some more if I ever get to go anywhere again.
I know ignorance of the law is no excuse but sometimes it's best not to know certain things I guess.
You learn something new every day :)
