Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I'm moving to a new house with my puppy this summer. Rental homes in the new town are in short supply so I ended up renting a home with a non-fenced backyard. Actually, 3/4 of it is fenced thanks to the neighbor's fencing, but the two side sections need to be fenced in. The landlord is okay with me putting up a fence, but it is on my own dime.
The house is an older cottage and I was thinking of going with a picket style fence as home depot sells premade panels, problem is that the fence height is only 42". My dog will not be left outside for hours unattended, but when I let her out I will go back inside for a while. Once full grown will my standard labradoodle be able to easily hop over a 42" fence?

Some dogs are jumpers and some are not. We work hard to teach our girls not to even stand up against the fence. Their yard is 5 feet tall but the fencing on the porch and leading to their yard is 4 feet and so far no problems. My girls are not jumpers though so hard to tell if they could clear that or not, Meg is very tall and Polly is probably a large medium.
I completely agree. Some jump others don't. I had a small dog that could leap over a four foot fence without a running start. She only did it to greet the mailman and my husband when he came home from work. Luckily the mailman liked her! She was not a runner, just a jumper. ;o)
It matters. Copper (28" tall and 80 lbs.) will not jump a fence. I have never really seen him jump at all. Groucho Too was 30" but never jumped a fence either, but he did learn to squeeze through an area behind a tree to get into the back yard. My two smaller, younger doodles, however, are jumpers and jump right over a 36" fence. It is around our garden and hot tub, but there is a 6 ft. fence around the perimeter of our back yard. So far, no jumping over that. Good luck.
The fence is too short for a full sized dog, especially an active young dog or even an older one who sees something very enticing on the other side.
My guy is a jumper! Hard to predict a height, IMO
