Witnessing evolution gone awry

A bit of background first:   When I was growing up, our family dog Tommy lived outside (although my sister and I always snuck him inside), so we often saw Tommy dig a hole, drop his bone or chewtoy inside, and then cover it up by pushing the dirt over the hole with his nose. 

 

Well, it appears that the years of evolution of burying a cache has left my little Riley a bit confused. 

Yesterday, Riley was chewing on a bully stick and had a piece left over.  He picks up the leftover piece and places it in the middle of his bed, and then he proceeds to nudge the bed with his nose, but the bed's not really moving, and it certainly isn't covering up the bully stick.  Having seen Tommy bury his bones, I knew exactly what Riley was trying to do. We live in a high-rise condo without a backyard, so there's no place for him to hide it outside.  Poor guy.  It was as if he instinctively was trying to cover it up but didn't know how.  I'll have to videotape it next time.

My dogs do that. Both Peri and Taquito hide them under their bed cushions. They dig, dig, dig like they are outside. Pretty funny!

Tara has a dog bed that is flat and she LOVES it if I throw an old worn out flannel sheet over it!! She digs around in it and makes a nest and sometimes she buries her little bullystick remnants or toys in it!! Maybe you can create a little indoor nest/burying area for Riley?

Sophie does this with the food dish. We also used to have a little poodle that would lay her treats right in the middle of the living room floor and do this same thing to bury them. It was like, ok, now you can't see them.

My Charlie does this with anything we give him that is bigger than the size of a small cracker. He hides treats, bones, bully sticks...anything and everything. If it is very special treat, he will hide it then bark for us to come find it...like he is playing hide and seek. When we find it, he picks it up and takes off to another part of the house to hide it again. I have found things everywhere from under the pillows and blankets on beds to behind curtains, in the cushions of the couch, in baskets, in closets under clothes...just about anywhere that you can imagine. Doodles are very creative!!

We also have found Chewie's leftover bully sticks hidden around the house...in cushions, behind the drapes. It's so funny to (secretly) watch him scout out a hiding place.

Yes, and is Chewie like Charlie? If he notices us seeing him hide it, then he picks it back up and finds a different hiding place.

Gezz, guys at our house I am the one hiding the toys and treats around the house and Tara is the one looking for them!!! Sounds like we have things backwards!!!
