I'm so torn on what to do...

Tuesday night Zoe started to feel sick. She was pacing around and kept eating grass outside. Throughout the night she woke up about 5-7 times gagging and throwing up. With each gag there would be a SQUEAL before she threw up. I have never heard her do that before and it made me extremely worried. At one point I thought she ate a mouse and it was squealing inside of her (i know i'm pretty retarded sometimes). Anyways I decided I was going to take her to the vet first thing AM.
Once we all got up and ready she was no longer throwing up and was just lethargic and sleeping curled up. Although she wouldn't eat I thought she would just need rest so DH and I both went to work.
When DH got home he said there was no signs of throw up but she was still eating grass but not taking her dinner. When I got home I discovered that my husband is awful at checking things thoroughly. She went into the farthest room (the only room with carpet might I add) and threw up multiple times and had multiple episodes of diarrhea. Her diarrhea had mucous and blood. That was around 8pm and her regular vet is closed! So off we went to the pet ER.

The dr saw her right away and advised they would like to hold her over night, run tests, x-rays, blood panel, put her on an IV, etc. The whole deal! I asked if she could get the IV since she was dehydrated and would take her to her regular vet in the morning. They said ok but DH thought it best we keep her there just in case anything happened at home. He thought it best that she stays with professionals that know how to handle a situation if anything happened. I personally felt more comfortable taking her to my regular vet but he was right. I would just die if anything happened to her.

They called last night at 12 to update us that her blood panel came out normal and they found no foreign objects in her stomach in the x-rays. This morning they updated us that she is still not eating, has not thrown up, but has had 3-4 episodes of bloody diarrhea throughout the night. The want to keep her until tonight to see if she will eat and keep it down.

My dilemma is...
I would like to pull her from the ER and take her to our regular vet. Does that make sense to do or is that just not necessary? The ER has not given me any explanations as to what is causing Zoe to be so sick. I think I would feel more comfortable at our vet but DH is saying a dr is a dr. Should I just keep her where she is until they call to pick me up?

I hope Zoe is back home by tonight and feeling better!!

I threw out the salmon treats which were the only new treats.  All the other ones were ones they always had.  Should I just throw out everything just in case?  Bender is ok but he's bigger idk.

I personally would not. This sounds like an acute not chronic onset. There is always the possibility that something was in a new product, be it toxin or microorganism. But if you've been feeding something for some time I would keep it. A new bag/container of the same old food could be a problem though.

That does sound drastic and not necessary for well "vetted" food.

I agree with F. I really don;t think it's necessary to throw away food or treats unless it is something brand new and even then it's doubtful that it caused this, especially if it's a good brand like Zuke's.

That is a very good idea Sandy.  Once Libby was having trouble, not as bad as Zoe, but we did exactly that and she turned around in about 24 hrs.  Not sure it was the food, but something worked.

So happy to hear that the little lady might be coming back home tonight.  Just curious if the emergency ER ever ran a fecal test on her?  If not pancreatitis I would want to know for sure that the bloody loose stool wasn't a parasite...

I'd guess that the bloody stool was due to some type of colitis or gastroenteritis, which would be much more likely to cause most of the other symptoms than parasites would.

I am so glad Zoe seems to be getting better. I really hope they can give you some idea what would have causes this. Enjoy her and hand feeding chicken bits usually got Cassie to start eating. It is so hard when they are not well.

I'm so glad to hear she is feeling better, and I hope she get's to come home tonight!

Thanks for the update on Zoe. Glad she is feeling better. Everything is better at home though...hope she is back with you and Bender and eating again soon! :)

I'm so glad Zoe is feeling better! When Cocoa was sick she wouldn't eat boiled chicken for the vet, but she ate for me when I came to visit. Perhaps when you visit Zoe this evening she'll eat for you.
