Been a little frustrated an unsure why Zoey had been itching so much. I was first thinking it was her collar because she wasn't used to wearing one.  Then I thought it may be a food allergy.  Her ears had been cleaned but did seem a bit dirty but she is such a poof ball.  I brought her in to the vet and they did a ear swab and found a mite.  I have 4 animals 2 cats and 2 dogs (okay, and a horse but she is stabled else where haha!) and they were going to charge me $34 for 1 dose of ivermectin for her ear mites!  This would mean I would have had to pay $136 to treat all my animals.  You can get the stuff at Mills Fleet Farm, Amazon, or any place for $35 for an entire bottle.  I couldn't believe that!  I didn't know they used Ivermectin for mites since I use it for Max as a heartworm preventative I already had the stuff at home.  Anyway, thought I would share since it saved me a bunch of money!  Mites gone with one dose!

Glad it was something easily fixed.

Is this a liquid form of ivermectin? I'm only familiar with the oral kind used for HW prevention.

Yes, it is a liquid form.  You can use the liquid form for HW prevention as well as a topical.  It is the same stuff they put in the traditional HW medicine that is so expensive.  You just have to be careful that you are dosing them correctly.  I just give it on a piece of bread for HW.  For the mites you just use the syringe (no needle) and squirt it in the ears and give it a massage. It is safe for both cats and dogs.

Do you think I should inform the breeder of the mites?  Not sure if this is something to "complain" about since it is pretty common..

I would mention it. It doesn't have to be in the form of a complaint, just letting her know. Other animals might also be affected.

It's very common and probably like lice for your children.  You are upset when you find out that they have it and would like to blame somebody else, but it is just a common thing with kids (and ear mites with animals).  So just deal with it, and some holistic remedy might be better than drugs from the vet.  I'm on a holistic kick and hate giving any meds to animals or people.  My dogs take meds for heartworms and ticks, and get their required rabies vaccination, but forget the rest of it.  Just my opinion.

how do they get ear mites?

A lot of times they get them from outside cats. They are very highly contagious and will spread through a group of animals like wildfire. Very common in farm settings and places where there are lots of animals who spend time both indoors and out...in other words, the typical doodle breeder's facility, lol.

thanks Karen!  my gosh I learn about so many things here on DK!

Glad you got rid of the mites. You don't need a prescription for this? The vets control heartworm prescriptions so tightly.

Many people think they need a prescription but you don't need a prescription.  They sell Ivermectin at mills fleet farm or even on Amazon.  You just need to be careful about the dosage and make sure you buy the correct syringe (no needles) you just need the syringe for dispensing.  If you buy ivermectin it should last you a couple of years or past the expiration date.  You can buy a 10 pack for like $4 on Amazon.  Just Google Ivermectin and you will be enlightened.

In MN you can't get vaccinations for some reason. But in other states you can.  So what a lot of people do over here is go to WI if they live close by the border and get there vaccinations there.  For example we can get our annual 7 way distemper with parvo at the vet for a $30 office visit, $36 vaccination charge,  plus you add on your service, tax, and disposal fees.  We can go across the river (maybe a 15 minute drive if you live in the twin cities area) and buy the same vaccinations and pay only $6 for Distemper, $6 bordatella, and give our own.  The packs are already predosed and you don't have to worry about anything.  You can also save because you can also get your cats vacs there at the same time.  I'm not sure why MN does allow the public to purchase these vacs but you can in other states.  Doesn't make any sense.  For annual maintenance on a healthy pet it could save you a lot of money.  We also found for a spay in WI they only charge $180 max and in the cities here it costs around $300 for the exact same procedure.  Once you find a good vet you just stick with them just like you would with your children doctors.

Thanks for the info. I did glance at Amazon and the Ivermectin formulations were mostly for horses. Can you tell us why you buy specifically? I am we'll aware this is only for those of us who'd feel comfortable doing this.

This is the Ivermectin I use: just the small bottle should last you a long time (like 2 years).

This is the syringes I get and only use 1 and throw them away: They are very small.
