OK--the May assignment is a natural progression of what we have practiced so far and it can/should use all of your May suggestions. For our May assignment shoot the best photo you can using the proper ISO, aperture and shutter speed. Composition and effective cropping are always important! The May assignment is to use all of this but the end product will be black and white. I say the end product because the preferred method for a final black and white photo is to shoot the photo in color and then convert it to black and white in post processing using a program like Photoshop or any free online post processing program like Picasa 3. You can choose the black and white setting on your camera if you prefer but there are some disadvantages to this. I am off and running right now but I will get a good black and white intruction/tutorial up for you by tomorrow. Happy shooting!!!!!

ALSO--please include camera shooting information: A, S and ISO. I find this very helpful when I'm looking at a phot I really like . . . And for this lesson, how did you achieve the B&W image? Was it shot in B&W or did you convert it in post processing. And if you converted it, what method did you use?

Fun!!!
Thank you. Love those tutorials! Will it explain why it's better to do color first?
I will put up a detailed tutorial this afternoon (have to go to a meeting now)--it will hopefully explain most everything . . .
Saw the other message and will read those, thanks so much.
Uh oh ... Are you saying we have to shoot in full manual?
No--not at all. I better get busy and put up the tutorial!!!
I got the idea from this sentence:

"shoot the best photo you can using the proper ISO, aperture and shutter speed."

I'm not sure how to manipulate all three of those without full manual...?
I'm sorry!! I DID NOT MEAN to imply full manual! In fact it is very seldom that even a professiopnal photographer uses manual--most situations need either A or S mode and the camera makes the corresponding adjustments. ISO is a consideration when lighting is an issue. What I really meant to say is shooting in black and white is not any different in color in that you take the best picture you are able to take in whatever shooting mode is appropriate for the situation: A if shallow or deep depth of fiels is important; S if capturing action is important and always consider lighting to select the appropriate ISO.
Got it! Thanks!
Diane is right. I know never use full manual, hardly ever. I typically use "A" aperture priority (I control the aperture/f-stop, the camera adjusts the shutter speed accordingly) for situations where I want to control the depth of field. I use the "S" shutter speed (I control the shutter speed, the camera adjusts aperture/f-stop accordingly) in situations where there is a lot of action and I want to control the blur or sharpness of the image.
Adina, Haven't you learned that the camera knows more than all of us put together? : ) Well, maybe only about taking fast, fabulous, focused photos--I do love alliteration.
And Adina Altogether Adores Alliteration TOOO much! It's like a tic sometimes. Must. Alliterate!
