You may have noticed that when you take some photos - especially those that are dark - you get a lot of
digital noise in the image. A grainy look that can be nice on BW/retro images, but not desirable on most photos. The good news is that you don't have to live with it! And there's several ways to fix it. Let's share our techniques here for correcting it.
Personally, I like to use Noise Ninja, by Picturecode:
http://www.picturecode.com/index.htm It's very quick/easy to use. It's available as a Photoshop plugin or as a stand alone program. The Pro Bundle is about $80, the stand alone version is about $35. Well worth the price.
TECHNICAL NOTE: I create a duplicate layer of my image. Then I apply Noise Ninja to the top layer and adjust the "Opacity" (if it looks too smooth) to blend it in with the noisy layer below it. Sometimes I will erase areas of the top layer to bring in certain crisp features of the bottom layer.
BEFORE/AFTER EXAMPLE: Photos taken with a Canon EOS 5D, Canon 100mm Macro Lens, ISO 1600, 1/100 sec, hand held. (Toby was feeling too hyper this morning to sit still for the camera so I quickly snapped a photo of my SIberian Husky who was calmly sitting nearby.)
