I Want Something More Than My HP R717 Point & Shoot

I too, have been "lurking" here in the Photography Group.....reading and learning.   I just LOVE taking pics of Banjo, I haven't taken this kind of interest in photography since my kids were little....( a LONG time ago!).    It'll be sometime before I finally get something different and I'll use the time learning as much as I can.     I'm seeing lots of ads for the Sony NEX5 and wondering if anyone here has any experience with this model.   I'd like to learn to take good "action" shots and also "portrait" shots.
I especially like the size of the Sony NEX5 but am wondering if I'll be happy with it's performance in the long run.

Thanks so much Linda....these links were very helpful!! I had pretty much decided that the Rebel T1i was the camera I wanted after reading so much about it here and other online reviews (Amazon,etc.) but was curious about the Sony. I'll take your advice! Now.....I just need to come up with the moola! : )
