1. Find the histogram display on your camers. If you're not sure how to bring it up, check your camera's user manual. If you don't have a histogram function on your camera (most digital cameras do) you can upload your photos in a post processing program (prorams like Picasa are free) and tweak your photo there.

2. Take a photo with well-distributed tonal value which will be reflected in a balanced hitogram (reference the June lesson).

3. Take a high-key photo. This histogram will be skewed to the right but the resulting photo will still be pleasing to the eye--and remember, your eye is the only eye you really have to please!!

4.Take a low key photo. This histogram will be skewed to the left but the resulting photo will still be pleasing to the eye!!

Remember to include yout shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings with your submissions. If you are able to, also include the histogram. HAVE FUN!!!! Can't wait to see what you come up with!!!!

WOW! Don't even need to say more.
So awesome....if only I could do this.
OK. Let's see if I did this right. These are both pictures that I took a couple of weeks ago. I checked out the histograms in Photoshop Elements, but I couldn't figure out how to print the histogram here.

In this one, the histogram was skewed to the left, which I think means it was a little underexposed. That makes sense to me, since it seems a little dark. ISO 1600; Shutter 1/30; Aperture f/13.0

In this one, the histogram was pretty much in the middle. It was maybe a little to the left of center, but it was much more bell-shaped (the bell being pretty wide) than the first pic. ISO 1600; Shutter 1/40; Aperture f/13.0

I didn't get an example with the histogram skewed to the right.
Good work. The second picture of Halas is lovely.
Agree--good job!! One photography instructor told us to start with ISO at 100 and raise it only as you really need to--1600 is probably a lot more than you need; maybe 800 if it was a darker shot . . .
Love the second shot!!!!! What a cutie!

Found these examples from pictures I already had. Couldn't figure out how to add the histograms. The pictures with the house and tulips is the balanced histogram, 1/30s, The picture of the cat is skewed to the left, 1/100s and the picture of Quincy in the snow is shewed to the right, 1/500s. Didn't do any adjusting to the photos so what you see is in it's original state.
I think the cat photo is great! Skewed to the left or not. Beautiful cat, pose and backdrop.
