It's been a long winter and now another storm is about to hit us, even though it's technically Spring.

I agree.  We are expecting snow tomorrow.  Fortunately it will probably be gone Thursday.

Wow.  Even sunny Southern California is expecting a heavy (for us) winter rain.

So sad but not a flake here yet

Brrrrrrr--that's a lot of snow!

According to an arborist who looked at it, the pecan tree in our backyard is probably 250 years old.  It supplies food for many birds.  This messy woodpecker is a frequent spring visitor.

Above shot with Nikkor 28-300mm lens; below with Sigma 150-500mm.  Both from same location in the house.

Wow, that is impressive as is the woodpecker.

The pileated is a very impressive bird.  It Flys from somewhere across the field behind my house to the pecan tree squawking the whole way.  It returns home the same noisy way.

Nice capture of this beautiful bird, Anne

Thank you,  DJ.

That Sigma lens is powerful! What a wonderful, clear and crisp close up. Do you have to be concerned that the woodpecker will damage the tree? It seems something people worry about out here.

Thank you, Nancy.  So far all it does is eat the bugs under the bark.  Pileated woodpeckers are very shy.  I don't think it would actually make a nest cavity close to humans.  (I think they are afraid of going the way of the extinct Ivory Billed woodpecker which they resemble.)
