Went to the Dr today to get the split replaced with a cast for my broken wrist . . . or so we thought . . . when I took the splint off for x-rays (first time I removed it since I broke my wrist on the 27th)--my wrist looked yukkie . . . almost deformed and even the back of my wrist is black and blue . . . I was therefore surprised, but not totally shocked, when the Dr advised surgery. The wrist is broken much worse than the emergency room staff thought. Without surgery, I will probably never regain full function of my hand and/or fingers. The up side is it is in and out the same day even though they will put me under . . .

I really, really need to solve my bone strength issue before I wind up breaking a major bone--like hip or tailbone which I easily could have done this time. I have an awesome primary care Dr and she already has a plan in mind to try to diagnose whatever the specific issue it is with my bones and come up with a plan to correct the problem. Strenght training will no double be a component . . .

So, for the next few weeks, I will be mostly one handed. It's not too bad for photography except that the turning motion of focusing hurts a bit . . .

Oh, no! You poor thing! When is the surgery scheduled for?
I have to call and schedule Monday morning--they think probably Thursday . . . I'm messing with Corel Painter for the first time and having a blast!!!
Be careful....for me, it's addictive.  I love it!
Oh no!!! Diane I'm so sorry to hear this!    I guess on the "bright" side....at least it's winter...and you'll be good as new for the nice weather!    I can't wait to see your new "paintings"!!!    I love Corel's Painter....and have been guilty of losing hours in a day to it!
Diane, I'm so sorry to hear this.  Is it still painful?  I certainly hope they get to the bottom of what's impacting your bone strength.
I am sorry to hear all this but best to take care of it sooner rather than later. I hope things go very smoothly. And remember "Auto" can take some pretty darn good shots too.

Ouch!  Sorry to hear the bad news, but glad they did get that splint off and actually see what was going on!  Positive thoughts and prayers going up for you and your medical team.  Keep us posted on your progress....

Sometimes I am out of the loop around here--so What HAPPENED?   Sorry to hear about your wrist.   What type of surgery?  Closed reduction?   Bone reconstruction?   Amputation?  Naw...

Please keep us posted... Hunt and Peck works at least on the computer.   Maybe, someone out there has devised a camera that works on voice control. If not, develop and patent one!!!!   Best Wishes

Hahaha!!!! I'm not really sure how to define the surgery . . . I don't think it's an amputation . . . (smile!!)

I slipped on black ice when we went to our montain house for the holidays. Landed hard on my butt; fortunately, my hips and tailbone were spared. Broke my left wrist. Emergency room folks said it wasn't a bad break; the orthopdic folks disagree--I guess my bones actually shifted and without surgery (a plate to hold things together), I may never have full function of my hand again . . . I'm actually doing just fine, although slow, on the computer and with my camera!!

There certainly is good voice recognition now for the computer. I use it for dictating reports.
Hi Diane, sorry you didn't get better news about your wrist. No puns this time. If you do have to get a cast after your surgery be sure and ask for fiberglass it is much lighter and comes in great colors. The surgery they are posposing is called "Internal Fixation" which simply means they have to make an incision and insert hard ware, usually plates and screws. This stabilizes the fracture and you should be able to use your wrist sooner than if it had to heal on it's own. Can you tell I work on an Orthopedic ward? Good luck, hope you feel better soon. BTW you take better photos with one hand than some of us do with two! Please let us know how the surgery goes.
Thanks, Donna!! Since you know your way around bones, please tell me what I can do to strengthen mine . . . My primary Dr (who is great in my opinion) said there is a bone test that will determine if my bones is accepting ther med in Boniva, etc. And if it's not, we can figure out something different. (I take the DEXA test every year.) I also understand that being small (5'3", 110 pounds) actually works against me because bones will only be as strong as they need to be to support your body and that strenght work-outs tricks bones into thinking they are supporting a heavier body. Soooo, I was doing strenght work-outs but not with enough consistency . . . and other ideas?
