I'm soooo sorry to hear about Toby. Thank goodness he is alright. How scary for you. His poor tummy looks so tender. (I don't even think Alma had that many stitches after being spayed.) I hope he recovers soon. We have given Alma Pepcid on occassion when she has "sour stomach." Now I always have it on hand. Keep us posted on Toby.

My poor little Toby had to have exploratory abdominal surgery this week. On Thursday he threw up first thing in the morning - just fluid/bubbles. Later in the day and on Friday I found a couple small areas in the house where he had thrown up again. Saturday morning he refused to eat. That evening he ate dinner so I thought he was ok. But in the middle of the night he began to throw up violently and repeatedly. Lost his whole dinner and threw up about ten more times within an hour or so. He also pooped on the floor which was very unusual - and then got dry heaves. I woke our vet up and she offered to meet me at the clinic, but then he had finally fallen asleep while she and I were talking, so we decided to meet her there first thing in the morning. His Xrays showed that his intestines did not look normal. They put him on IV's and kept him overnight. He refused to drink any water (this is 12 hours after he threw up), was becoming increasingly sensitve to touching his stomach, and Xrays showed his intestines looking even more abnormal. We opted to do exploratory surgery, hoping they would not find an object stuck in there. (She has lost two dogs on the operating table recently due to people waiting too long to operate. Intestines can rot very quickly w/o proper circulation.) Turns out he had a tremendous amount of gas trapped in an area of his intestines and irritation - most likely caused by something bad that he ate a few days earlier ... perhaps a dryer sheet or something that he pooped or vomited but was still having a residual effect - which was most likely causing him severe pain and distress. She was able to ease the gas over a bit to help it escape naturally. In the future she said that any time he has vomiting with bubbles/foam, give him an over the counter Pepcid tablet. (Ingredient to look for is Famotidine. Toby is 30 lbs so his dosage is 10mg.) Had I known to do this, and given it to him on Thursday, we may have been able to prevent this surgery. GOOD TO KNOW! He has to wear this cone for 10 days - until his stitches are removed. His incision is about 9 or ten inches long. :(

Something else good to know is that we could have picked up a pet insurance policy at http://www.gopetplan.com with a $200 deductible and 100% reimbursement for less than $200 year. But we procrastinated and Toby's bill came to $1,574. Ouch! Learn from my mistake! Get pet insurance today!

Thank you all for the birthday wishes! It's been a fun and tiring day! We had beautiful weather today (low 40's), very pleasant day, it almost seemed like spring, especially after all the cold and snow we have had recently. We were able to enjoy some long walks. And now he's pretty tired out! Hope all the brothers also enjoyed their day!
