Gibbs tore the skin around his toe nail

Don't have a clue how he did this, outside playing and comes in limping. Started licking his foot and didn't want me to touch and look at it. Took Gibbs to the vet and they had to sedate him to look closely at what had happened. Poor baby had to be carried out of the vets office and carried into the house. He's been laying in his bed all night, had pain medicine and antibiotic, he's totally exhausted. Anyone experienced anything like this before?
