Hi !

We have a cottage on a lake in Nova Scotia & love it there, esp. our doodle Bella , who we can't keep out of the water! The only bad thing is the new neighbors who dislike dogs ( hard to imagine) ..and Bella tries to roam over all the time to say hello...after all she thinks everyone loves her! There is a fence btw. us but she figured out how to wade out in the water and go around the fence.

We are wonderng how those invisible fences would work there? That would cover a large area, as at present it is too large to put up a regular fence & keep our doodle at home.

Any thoughts?

I have enclosed a couple pics...one at sunset we love, Bella is in the bottom right corner, she is like us and loves to look out over the water.

Hello Ann...

We live on a large lake in South Carolina...with 2 acres of property.

Sasha loves the water...much like Bella...and she loves to be in it all the time!

We have an invisible fence...and you can have it activated in different ways.

You can have it so your dog can't go into the water at all ...or...you can have it set so they can access the water.

We want Sasha to be able to go into the water...so...we have it activated so that she can go into the water...and she is able to go 20 feet from the end of our floater which is on the end of the dock...and that is 110 feet from the shoreline.

Since the invisible fence lines the perimeter of our property...she also can't go to the sides.

This would prevent Bella from wading over to your neighbors property....and take care of your problem!  (smile)

We are very happy with the invisible fence...and Sasha never tries to go out of the yard.

I hope this is helpful Ann...and...if you have any other questions...please don't hesitate to ask.

I love the pics of Bella...she's beautiful!!

First of all, welcome to Cottage Doodles!  Love your pictures.  Your place looks lovely!

At the cottage we have a wireless e-fence that we use with Gavin.  The transmitter plugs into the wall inside and the signal covers an area of 90 feet in all directions from the base. You can make the boundaries smaller if you want, but not bigger.   It has worked really well for us, and since we are on mostly rock, no line to bury.  It took some training, but Gavin has responded really well and will not break his boundaries even if you throw a tennis ball through it.  Stella has an e-fence too and so does Janette.  Hopefully they will chime in with their experiences.

Hello.  We have a difficult neighbour at our cottage who also didn't want our doodle on her property.  We erected a temporary plastic construction/snow fence - a green one that blends in with folliage.  I extended the fence approx 20 feet into the water. The fence and some extensive and persistent training soon convinced Keira to not go to the neighbour's.

The fence was taken out of the water after the first season, because of winter freeze-up.  I didn't bother to reinstall the fence the following spring as Keira "gets it" and doesn't venture off property unless we guide her to do so.

This approach worked very well for us.

This is a great idea Pierre.  One thing that I have found with my guy is that he really catches on fast to boundary training.  We have set up "invisitble gates."   For example there is a "gate" to the laundry room and he cannot go in there unless we invite him.  At home he cannot go out the open fence gate, unless we lead him out.  We can leave it open and be out in the driveway and he does not go through it.  I discovered this power through the training for the e-fence as we needed to cross the line to leave property for a walk.  So we go on leash to the same place each time (where the "gate" is) have him sit for about five seconds, say okay, and hustle through.  Same thing on the way back in.

We have the Petsafe electronic boundary fence, the same as BruceGirl.  The nice thing about it is that it is portable, so you can spend time at home training to it before you go if you want.  You could also take it camping etc. as long as there is somewhere to plug it in.  We have two doodles.  One trained really well to it and will not cross the boundary for anything.  The other is generally good, won't follow us across, won't go after his ball etc....... But, he will cross if he sees a deer.  He is only a 50lb dog and we have the correction on his collar set as high as it will go.  He doesn't care!  If he sees a deer he takes the pain and runs as fast as he can through the correction zone!!

One advantage of the electronic fence is that they don't get shocked on the way back in when they do come back.  I believe that the invisible fence shocks in both directions, so if your dog goes through it likely won't come back through to the inside again without you turning the fence off and persuading her!!   So, in part the success of the fence depends upon the personlity of your dog too.  The receiver on the collar is waterproof, so they can swim with them on.
