Okay,I'll take the plunge and be first. Recently I decided to make a gate in my upstairs hallway to keep the doodles out of the spare bedrooms and my office. I tried a commercial gate and found it too hard to keep standing and I couldn't open it with one hand. Easy opening and closing is important since I'm often carrying things. I wanted something low so that I could still have the heat circulate from room to room. I took advantage of a step in the hallway and made the gate even lower than I might have otherwise. The gate is made of very thin plywood, has 2 small hinges, a cup hook and loop of wire. Since the plywood is so thin there is a thicker strip of wood to hold the hinges securely. The gate is placed so that it can mostly fold back behind the office door when not in use. It is a little narrower than the hall opening because the opening that it as to pass through in order to be folded back is narrower. Like many of my projects it's not quite finished. I'll prime the wood and paint it to match the hall woodwork and I hope that'll greatly improve the gate's appearance. Since I cannot tell a lie in this group, I confess that when the handyman was here cleaning my gutters a few weeks ago he cut the plywood and put in the hinges. The idea is mine, I bought the materials and I just had him do it because he was here and it would get done faster. It is easy, inexpensive and works! The doodles were kind enough to pose unasked.
