Having a 12 week old puppy has been trying and so rewarding at the same time. Pee and poo accidents were common in the beginning but going so much better now. At first, I bought the enzymatic cleaners and some cleaner called Eco-88 from the vet which worked great. After researching, I decided to try and see if I could make my own carpet cleaner that would do the job of breaking the urine odors and getting stains out. I tried a few recipes and finally found one that worked for us. I thought I'd share, so here goes...
1 cup vinegar
1/2 cup baking soda
1 cup water
1/4 cup lemon juice
Couple drops of dawn dish detergent
And 1/3 cup of household strength hydrogen peroxide
I put it in a spray bottle and use it. If its a fresh pee stain, I blot up as much of the urine with paper towels, then spray the cleaner down enough to really saturate the carpet. Let it sit for 20 minutes then blot it up. An old stain, I saturate let it sit, blot then spray and blot again. It totally eliminates the urine smell and my Roger is never reattracted to that spot again. Now this could totally be a coincidence but since it has worked for us, I thought I'd share.
The stuff has never discolored my carpet but I would test a spot just to be safe. It has saved me a ton if money. I really liked the Eco-88 but it cost about $18 a bottle and this is just pennies. You do need a dark spray bottle because the peroxide will not work if the bottle is light colored and you keep it in there. But as far as I can tell, it looks and acts the same as the Eco-88. I actually put it in the same bottle since the bottle is not transparent. It has saved me a ton of money and virtually works on everything that I've tried it on and urine smells are the worst an I have the nose of a hound dog. Lol
