Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello All!

I have been a quiet observer on this forum and decided to go ahead and join as well! :)

I ordered the Cowboy Magic Detangler to use on my 15 month old - F1B goldendoodle.
He doesn't shed, but has been getting a lot of mats recently. We would like to keep his coat long but unless we get rid of the mats, he might be going to the groomer for a short cut.
I was wondering if someone (who uses this product) can tell me how to use it. Do you just rub it in the mat and then work at it with a comb. Do you dilute it and spray it on the entire coat? Before/after a bath?
I'm confused! :(

Thank you so much for your help!

P.S. I apologize if this topic was already discussed.

Hi....I do use this on my F1b Labradoodle.....but, it won't take mats out that are in pretty good...it will help to avoid future mats. I bathe her with the Cowboy magic shampoo, then rinse.....did you get the conditioner/detangler with rosewater..or, the clear detangler/shine..? I use both on mine. I use the rosewater conditioner/detangler after bathing her...I rub it in well, then rinse it out. When she is all rinsed and dry a bit, I take a very small amount of the detangler/shine and rub it into her fur. This seems to keep the mats from forming quickly. I do have to brush her very well like everyother day to keep the little knots from turning into mats. She has very fine long hair that seems to knot very easily. The conditioner and shine both make her coat very soft and manageable for me. Since the products are concentrated, you could probably dilute and put in a spray bottle to make it easier.....
Let me know how it goes....

Yeah, I have the same questions. I bought some Cowboy magic recently but I think the mats were too big (or too far gone) for the product to be effective. Her hair is very long now. I ended up having to cut the mats out and Gracie is going to her groomer this week for a "summer cut". I need to know how to prevent the mats in the future. I do brush Gracie almost every day, just a few parts, like a leg or two, at a time. This matting seemed to come along suddenly. I have no explanation. She is 2 and lost her puppy coat a very long time ago.
Ned seems to be done with the actual matting stage however he still mats. I consider myself a mat queen because he went through this horrible coat change for 1 1/2 years!!!! And we never had to have him shaved. Cowboy Magic makes several products but I assume you want info. on using the Detangler. What I did and was advised to do was to rub the 'ointment' like stuff into the mat and let it sit for a bit to 'soak' in, then gently begin combing it out. Do not put your brush or comb next to the skin and just try to yank through the mat. To comb out a mat you start at the ends (not next to the skin) and brush/comb, move a bit closer to the skin and comb to the ends, move a bit closer to the skin and........ Some mats can't be combed out but if you slice sideways through the mat in several places you might be able to comb it out or only have to cut a smaller chunk. Remember not to slice with the blade toward the skin but slip the scissors as close to the skin (facing away from it) as possible and cut with the length of the hair. Did I just ramble or did I explain so you understand????? Another product I really like to use is a Spray on. It is called The Original Horse Mane and Tail Detangler. It is like a leave in conditioner/detangler. You spray it on, wait a bit and comb. I use this all over as well as on a specific mat. I also use a LesPouchs flexible slicker brush and a graduated toothed steel comb that I got from my groomer.
Marcia & Nancy, thank you for your help! I really don't like Charley's hair too short so I am willing to try anything to get the mats out and keep him mat free!
Nancy, thank you so much for being so detailed in your description of your technique, I am definitely going to give it a try and let you guys know how it goes.

Depending on how this Detangler works, I might give the shampoo and conditioner a try too!
I have the Cowboy Magic shampoo and used to bring it to my groomer to use and she liked it. She has found something she likes EVEN better but I keep forgetting to find out what it is.
I think the key ias Nancy said is to rub it in the mat and wait before combing. My problem is Tucker licks the stuff so I'm afraid to use it anywhere he can reach it. Besides the ?? danger of licking it, he gets the spot/ area more matting with the licking. Anyone else have the licking problem?
Did I forget to mention the grooming technique used in the Haver household? I have to embarrassingly admit that in order to groom Ned, my husband holds/cuddles him while I brush and comb. Ned will not hold still on his own and actually tries to hide if he thinks I have the grooming basket handy. He does, however, usually loves being cuddled while brushed.
