Hi guys! Daisy is 5+ months now and other than her face, her fur has never been cut or trimmed.

I am noticing that as warmer days approach (it's been close to 70 this week) she is panting...A LOT. Especially when we are outside. I have a few questions-

1. Is this a sign that maybe I should consider a summer cut for her?

2. Our groomer said her "puppy" fur will likely not grow back if we give her a summer cut right now and to be prepared for this. Is this true?

3. I've heard that the longer fur can actually keep them cooler- is this true or just nonsense? Lol

Thanks in advance!! This is how long her fur is now.

Becky, I'm not sure about the nerves in the pads. Yogi is pretty sensitive there also. He keeps pulling his paws back when I trim around them, but it doesn't seem to cause him pain. I've used clippers and scissors on them.

It's hard to do at home Becky! I do Daisy's eyes but I typically do them when she is resting after a long play or when she is asleep (she sleeps like a rock). Treats don't help her because she goes so crazy for the food that she won't hold still!

With Mila approaching 6 months I might even try to get her to the groomer at least maybe for a bath and sanitary trim/paw trim/face trim soon. We did that for Daisy just because I wanted to expose her to the groomer and get her used to it as young as we safely could (vaccinations). My fear was that if we waited until she was 7-8 months or even older for her first groom she would not be used to it and she would hate it! She really enjoyed going for the bath. :)

Short or long purely your choice.  There have been many discussions here as to whether the coat acts as both a cooler and a heater. Personally, I am a proponent of  keeping a coat longer as opposed to really short, but I do a  tad bit shorter in the summer.  I live in Southern California where it gets HOT - high 90s and low 100s, but it isn't as humid as where many of you  live.  My dogs are mostly inside when it is hot, however we rarely have the air conditioner on so it can get hot inside too.  My guys do some panting but so does my Springer Spaniel in his short coat.    When Ned was at the matting stage, I did go somewhat shorter to keep on top of his mats - he has a high maintenance coat.
