I have a question about thin coats versus thick coats. I don't know what is the "norm" is in coats and I'm just curious, since Hattie is my only frame of reference.
Hattie, is an F1 English GD and has a VERY, VERY, thick undercoat but is still very silky fleece. I believe the thickness comes from the English retriever?
Theo, is my new little Double Doodle. His mom was an F1B GD and had a tight wool curl. His dad was half LD multi-gen and half F1B LD. Theo's dad had a straight coat but not really silky and it was very thin. You could see his skin since he had a short cut when I met him. Theo's coat is very thin as well and at this point feels fleece like. You can't really see Theo's skin, but it is exceptionally thin, and then again maybe I am just used to Hattie. :/
I was just wondering. I'm scared to use the Les Poochs brush on him even! When Hattie came home we went right at it with that brush. Is there another type of brush to use with thin coats?

Tara's coat is similar to Theo's. Her hair is thin and fine and I can see the skin by just blowing on it. I have never used a Les Pooches brush on her because I am concerned it would be too harsh and irritating if I hit her skin and overall just too much brush for her. I use a regular slicker brush but am careful not to let the tines hit her skin and also a Chris Christensen pin brush with rounded tips. The CC brush works well as far as not hurting her but the pins are really spaced too far a part for her fine hair.
I just did a quick search and see that ball tipped slickers are available. I don't know if LP or CC makes a ball tip slicker but that would be ideal for Tara. I may order one of these for now though...
I agree with Ricki. Gracie Doodle has the fine silky wavy fleece coat and never liked the Les Pooches. I use the CC pin T brush but most of the time I just use a rotating tooth comb. Personally, I think the Les Pooches only work on the really dense, thick type of coat where you can't even see the skin if you were to part the hair!
I use a steel comb and a pin brush on Gavin.
Hard to say how thin is thin. I don't consider Gavin to have a particularly thin coat, but he definitely does not have an undercoat. When his coat is longer I can part the hair and easily find skin (like when I give him his monthly preventative between his shoulders).
I think the thin coat is just another variable in doodles. I remember Nancie saying that Gracie Doodle's coat was similar to Tara's and others have mentioned their doodles having thin, fine coats with no undercoat.
I mainly use a Steel Comb on Trixie for her daily grooming.
it works best.
Sometimes I use a pin brush- The Oval Shape...She is afraid of the noise the rectangle Pin brush makes!
If she seems to be sheeding more I use a rake down her back....maybe once a month.
