Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I've done a lot of research but before sinking $200 on a set of clippers, I've narrowed it down to two:
1. Andis Ceramic : Pros: Ceramic blades don't get as hot. Cons: doesn't hold a charge
2. Wahl Bravura: Pros: Recommended by a lot of Poodle people Cons: Cheaply made plastic components
What is your experience?

I'd like to hear what people say about this too. I'm frustrated with our current clippers and feel like the fur gets caught in the guards and/or pulls them off slightly.
We use an Andis Plus 2 (two speed) corded and have been very happy with it. We've never had trouble with the blade getting hot but Tara is small so that may be part of it. Is there a reason why you don't want a cord? I THINK you can get ceramic blades for any Andis clipper so maybe you could get a corded and buy the ceramic blades for it if you're concerned about overheating the blade. I do think Andis is a good well made brand. Also, we don't use any combs we just use different blades to achieve different lengths.
Yes
I have the Wahl professional animal 5 in 1, and it has worked out great. It's cordless, and keeps its charge for an entire session- lasting at least 1-1.5 hours. Doesn't get hot, price is reasonable (~$150), i've used it on a regular basis for 6 months or so with no issues. In fact, i bought a second blade set and use it to cut my son and husbands hair!
I've definitely gotten my $150 out of it already!
Hi, Heather. Thank you so much for your candid response. I truly appreciate that because I've definitely done the same. I saw you are in Weston, MA. I went to college near there. I loved the large properties in that area. Really pretty!
The Andis above is only one speed. Do you need a second speed? The two speed one is corded so I like cordless for the paw and face. Any idea if two speed is good?
I've got a Wahl Professional Animal Arco that I love! It is probably the same one or very similar to what Heather has. https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Professional-Cordless-Clipper-8786-600/... It's cordless, quiet, doesn't get hot, and powerful. It holds a charge for a complete groom, and it also comes with an extra battery so that it can quickly be replaced if needed.
Mine came with plastic comb attachments, but I also purchased a set of metal ones as they run through the coat much easier. https://www.amazon.com/Wahl-Professional-Animal-Stainless-Steel/dp/... My doodles have very different coats- Winnie is wavy/curly, and Bob has more of a retriever coat. The trimer I have works great for both. My friend that has a a very "poodly" doodle has the same trimmer as well.
The only problem that I've had with it is that I dropped it once and damaged a little hook that keep the blade attached to the body of the trimmer. It still works fine, but does tend to pop off if I'm not careful. I'm sure at some point I'll need to replace that part of it.
Okay I talked to my bf and they said I should just send him to the groomers. I think it is because he doesn't want to help me when I groom him. $75 every groom every month or $200 one time payment for clippers and attachment set. Maybe I can groom him without any help. My doodle does not like people touching his face so he shakes his head a lot.
I'm sure it totally depends on your pup, and your relationship with him, but it's quite likely that you won't need help. My Bert is super sensitive with his face hair as well, if you touch one little hair he pulls away and shakes. But for some reason when i get him on the grooming table he is basically stunned. I have to hold his muzzle when i cut his "bangs" and near his eyes, but he sits through it just fine. And i just have to hold his ear near the top when i trim the bottom and he sits still. In my opinion, and based on my experience, i wouldn't give up the idea if it's something that you're interested in doing yourself. I have never had to have someone help me groom him, and i find it enjoyable.
I'm a grooming newbie, so my experience may not count. My mini ALD is a handful to groom. I got an Andis ProClip (with a cord) and metal combs. It works well, and I haven't had trouble it getting hot, but Echo is very wiggly, even though she's a mini (about 20 pounds). (I got the coolant spray too.) I have a grooming table and dog harness, but Echo really has trouble co-operating. I've been bringing her to Petco to get sanitary trims and nail trims, and the rest I try to do. Petco said she's so wiggly it takes 2 people to hold her. I've been trying to pet her muzzle, tail, and feet a lot to try to get her used to me touching her.
