Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I hope there are many gardeners among us doodle owners. After all we must be nurturers. We can share information on what's safe for dogs, how to keep them from destroying plantings and all green related things.

There is no real health reason for gloves IMHO. And I often skip them. But for some reason dirt is hard on hands. It really dries them out I find. Sometimes it makes skin and nails, which can be hard to get clean, look like hell. So I think the gloves really serve to protect hands from the dirt per se. But there is for some of us, nothing like really getting your hands into the job and I often pull weeds, do some potting etc., without them. I think it's an inborn trait : )
Sorry don't have time to start a new discussion and move comments there. But to respond to RJ: I'm not deathly afraid of dirt. It's not a phobia or anything. I'm just not a carefree kid and to me dirt is...dirty. So as for the gloves question, to me it seems that if dirt is not some nasty, disease ridden, germ fest and kids play in dirt all the time and my dogs track in dirt 100 times a day...really it's nothing to be worried about. BUT when gloves are so popular and every gardening how to seems to make you wear gloves...I start to worry. WHAT am I needing to avoid touching it for'? Is it chemicals in fertilizers? Is it toxins, germs, flesh eating ants? LOL. I'm just wondering DO I NEED gloves and if so WHY? Does that make sense? I'm not gonna have a panic attack because dirt got on my hands...I just want to make sense of this whole 'wear gloves' but dirt safe deal. Also I do know that toxoplasmosis is really only a danger early in pregnancy...less and less so later and then not so much after baby is born.
F Parker...yes pottING soil...my touch pad sometimes jumps around and makes me add letters or misspell.
I WANT to work in my flower beds not in any other location because those are at the front of the house, are nicely contained, aren't subject to dog curiosity because we only have a fenced backyard so dogs are rarely in the front yard and then only leashed.
Maryann...I never liked the 'lab' part of science classes. HATED them actually. Dreaded chemistry lab every time...micro lab...bio lab...you name it. However, food science and nutrition labs were fun and involved NO dirt or weird chemicals in tubes.
Welcome. Things should pick up around here soon. My gardening has also fallen off with the doodles.
Just joining the group! Gardening was my number one passion, and then along came Jack! Looking forward to getting into the soil again!
I don't know if this will be helpful, but I use a child size, plastic wading pool and fill it with potting soil, then add what ever vegies or flowers we want to grow.
It is easy to tend to and really does work.
I just saw celery stalks, with leaves, standing in a planter with water in a Chinese takeout. The man there said it would grow roots.
As a child I liked potatoes in a clear glass so I could see the roots
Nasturium seeds are large and easy to plant for children. Also they germinate pretty reliably. You could do a mix of nasturium seed and seedlings from the local nursery. Carrots also are fun to plant and dig up. They can be mixed in with the flowers. Choose carrots that are round or short and stubby so you can harvest them sooner. Wash and scrape and eat. Enjoy!
Just how as a nutritionist, which is a science did you get so averse to a little good dirt?
Here you go Adina.
