Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello all,

I'm an avid runner and just got our Goldendoodle boy.  He is 9 weeks old right now, but once he's a year or so I would love to start running with him.  I see people on trails with dogs all the time.  I imagine they have to build up endurance just like we do..I probably run 60-70 miles in a week but would like my dog to join me on my shorter morning runs (3-5 miles).  I do really long 20 milers on the weekends and wouldn't expect a dog to do that..but would a shorter distance be okay?  Is a year old enough or should I wait longer?

I thought it was at least 2 years, but others will let you know. In the meantime get one of those running strollers and take him with you. Enjoy

Ha, I never thought about a running stroller for a puppy!  I've seen people use them for babies, maybe I should.  I know running with a stroller is a bit more difficult and a great workout.

Maybe it is two years.  I really don't have a lot of experience raising baby puppies.  My other dog was a rescue, and previous family dogs were all humane society adoptions and they were several years old when adopted.

I've seen the strollers--made just for dogs.  Most have netting.   You can attach them to your bike or push from behind. It would also provide some resistance.  Good workout. Great bonding and socialization time for you and the puppy!

I didnt read this article. Don't know if it is for or against.  Mainly I was looking for pictures.

This at least gives you an idea.  Don't waste the first year or two. Enjoy and take the puppy with you  :)

Just no jogging

Oh, when I typed in "running with a goldendoodle" into google I found this link and had to share it.

Apparently a neighborhood Doodle got out of his yard and saw a bunch of runners and decided to tag along with them.  He ended up at the finish line of a half-marathon event.  His owners were eventually found and It looks like they gave him a finishers medal.  How cute.
