Charlie went in for neutering this morning.  He has retained testicle so I’ve been told the procedures are a bit more complicated.  I just got a call telling me that he just came out of aesthesis and everything was fine, but they want to keep him overnight.  The Vet didn’t mention anything about overnight stay when I was dropping him off, and I was initially told that I can take him home today.  I’m going to go over to the clinic this afternoon to check up on him and see if I can take him home.  But does anyone know if it is normal after neutering?  I know there is going to be two incisions because of the retained testicles but I was reassured that it was routine and there will not be much risk.  Should I leave him over night (assuming the over night stay is supervised) or is it ok for me to take care of him at home?  Or maybe I’m just being too concerned and paranoid.  Any advice would help.  Thanks.

Did you still keep a cone on Charlie?  Bentley is on day 3 after the surgery and won't walk more than a step or 2 at a time.  I have to bring him back to the vet today.  It's awful.

No I took it off after the weekend because he keep on running into walls and doors, and also because he has the baby onesie on anyways.  He was drinking and eating fine after surgery (they told me to feed him only 1/3, but you can tell he was hungery.)  He was pretty much back to himself by Sunday afternoon (surgery was Friday morning), and I had to put baby gates in so he wouldn't be running up and down the stairs.  I hope Bentley feels better soon.

did the onesie really prevent him from licking himself? Bentley wouldn't stop licking it even with the plastic cone on.  We brought him to the vet yesterday, he's healing nicely but not completely so they want us to keep the cone on until Friday!  I made an appt to bring him in Thursday, we can't wait until Friday.  This week has been sheer torture for Bentley.  He's so depressed and even threw up a little today, although he ate his food before for the first time all week.

Charlie will still lick but he can't get to the wound, he'll just be licking the cloth.  I hope Bentley feels better soon.

I was afraid of Bentley biting at the cloth.  But we go to the vet today - they have to take it off.  Now his tummy is upset too :(

Susan, if he's on antibiotics, that's probably the cause of the nausea/upset tummy. Dogs often need antacids when they are on antibiotics. Try giving him some Pepcid AC or Zantac, generic is fine.

You may also want to give him some probiotics to replace the good bacteria in his gut. Plain unflavored fat-free yogurt may help, too. I hope he feels better soon.

Thank you Karen.  But he is not on any meds.  and he won't eat plain yogurt!  Vet told me to make him boiled chicken and rice and he has an appetitie but keeps throwing up a little and having loose stools when he tries to go.  I hope to get probiotics today when I bring him in.

The probiotics that most vets sell are not real great. The Purina product (Fortiflora) contains some nasty ingredients, in fact. The Iams product (Prostora) is not as bad, but it is loaded with sugar. Some vets sell Proviable DC, which is an excellent probiotic for dogs, but not many do. :(
