Not sure if I should post this here or in food group since it does involve food. Max had 2 vomits several days apart containing blood. We took him to the vet yesterday. Without taking blood test at this time everything looked OK & fecal was negative.
Max has a sensitive stomach and if he varies from his diet he will have loose stools. We were bad and gave hm ice cream twice and dh gave him bacon at breakfast Sunday. We explained this to the vet & he said a lot of his patients come in for same (food) reasons.
So, he gave Max an injection of Dexamethasone and we were told no food for 24 hrs. Then we were to feed him purina en plus 250mg Metronidozole.
I asked if we should give Max a probiotic and he got really testy and said he thought probiotics were a bad thing! I then asked about feeding chicken & rice & he said your problem was giving him different foods & proceeded to recommend purina en!! Obviously we need to find a new vet. This guys attitude sucks! How dare I question him!!
Since Max had the injection should I get a probiotic?
Should I give him the Metro?
He did have diahrrea yesterday evening , should I try pumpkin?
I will start him on rice & chicken today but not sure how much to feed. Max weighs 30 lbs.
And when do we start him back on kibble (Orijen)?
Thanks for any advice.
UPDATE: Max appears to be doing OK. He has been eating a combination of boiled chicken, sweet potato, pumpkin & yogurt. Yesterday I started adding kibble (Orijen), small amount. Throughout he has never lost his appetite and energy levels normal. I so appreciate everyones suggestions/advice.

You might also consider giving Max a 75 mg ranitidine (generic Zantac) tablet twice a day, that will help with vomiting and will also help settle his stomach.

Yup.

we had a similar problem with Bentley.  I gave him a small piece of a meatball and the next day he was vomiting and had diarrhea.  The vet said anything oily can do that.  They gave him a shot of fluids but they did give a probiotic for him to take I think for a week or 10 days.  She said to give him boiled, skinless chicken and white rice.  No kibble until his poops were better and then slowly add  a little in everyday.  I still give him boiled chicken with his kibble.  And I got white rice from the chinese restaurant bc it's stickier.

Thank you all for your advice. FYI, last Oct I posted in the food group Max's annual blood test. His amylase & lipase were high and that vet wanted to put him on low fat food, can't remember which one but science diet or prescription. He has been on Orijen for several years and it was suggested in the food group switching to senior orijen which is slightly lower in fat. He has been on the senior since Oct. I also posted that he had a bullystick daily. We've had no issues until this week. He always has good solid poops and once in awhile will vomit but sometimes he'll eat something on our walks or I might drop some food while cooking & if he's around it's inhaled in seconds!!
I did give him some rice & chicken this morning but agree with Karen he shouldn't have rice. What was I thinking!! He just rang the bell to go out & had dianrrea (that could be from the rice) but no vomiting so far today. I will get the sweet potatoes and continue looking for another vet. The vet we went to yesterday was new to the area and closer to home.
During this past week his energy levels have been normal and the only time he turned away from food was yesterday right before he vomited. He's never appeared to be in pain.

sorry but I have to disagree about the rice.  If he has diarrhea the last thing he needs right now is fiber.  The rice binds him and will help his stools go back to normal.  It must be white rice, because again, brown rice has too much fiber.  Again, just my opinion but I know that's what humans do too - lol.   He needs bland, low fiber food until he his poops are better.

Susan, I think the reason Karen suggested sweet potato vs rice is because Max is on a grain free diet due to loose stools when he had grain in his diet.

o, got it.  Poor Max and poor and Sandy

Tks Susan.

Fiber helps with diarrhea, that's why people give pumpkin. :)

Fiber has a paradoxical effect in that it helps both constipation and diarrhea. It's necessary for proper stool formation.

Dogs with IBD and other digestive illnesses are always on very high fiber diets and supplements, for this reason.

Elevated pancreatic enzymes all the more reason to avoid high fat treats!

don't know if these would be good but found them online

Tks Susan. This might be a good substitute. This is where i get the bullysticks!
