From what I understand The Boredetella vacination was recommended for dogs in close confinement, such as when boarding or in veterinary hospitals. I just got a card from my vet saying that Achilles needed to get this. Also needs a comprehensive examination before getting it. Achilles was just neutered a month ago, and had a comprehensive exam. Is my vet just looking to charge me more or is this something that is necessary? If it is I wouldn't hesitate, however I don't want to throw money away. Thanks for any input.
Jack gets the bordatella vaccine intranasally, and he never needs an exam for it if he is up-to-date on everything else, which he always is. The vet tech gives it, Jack never even sees the vet. Your dog should definitely get the bordatella vaccine if he goes to daycare, grooming facilities, dog parks, etc. It doesn't protect against all strains of bordatella, but it sure helps.
It's possible the card is computer generated by the date of the last bordatella vaccine and preprinted with the message about a comprehensive exam. The computer program doesn't know he was just there to be neutered, lol. Call the office and ask if you can bring him in for his bordatella and make sure they understand that he was just there a month ago for a full physical. If they tell you he needs another one, find another vet. You should be able to bring him in to get the bordatella alone.
If it'sintranasal that should be easy, though not pleasant, because the dogs must hate it, to give oneself. My question then is what do you do to show "proof" that your dog has had the vaccine?Any ideas?
There is usually a little preprinted sticker that comes with the vaccine that you can adhere to your dog's medical records and write in the date the vaccine was administered. Most breeders that I know do most of their own vacs.
Check out Jeffers Supply. Here is the link to the intranasal Bordetalla single dose vaccine.
So I called the vet's office today, the girl who answered the phone told me that the dogs health could change very quickly and that is how they do it. It looks like I need to find another vet!
