Has anyone used the type of flea protection? Does it really work as well as topical type. I was told it is a natural ingested table that kills fleas not the topical type that could wash out.
The topicals don't really "wash out"; they are not preventatives that repel fleas, but substances that enter into the dog's skin & tissue and kill anything that bites them. Once they have been absorbed into the dog's skin (about 12-24 hours for full penetration), there is no issue with the substance staying on the surface.
Comfortis is a prescription drug. Anything that is taken internally is more invasive than a topical. The main advantage of it, and what was behind it's development, is that it starts to kill fleas faster than the topicals, although 24 hours is not a big deal if your dog doesn't already have fleas. There have been warnings about interactions between Comfortis and ivermectin (Heartgard, worm & parasite meds). Here is a link that will give you more info about Comfortis. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=2768&S=1...
I give Gracie Comfortis and 15 days later I give her Sentinal. Then 15 days later I give her Comfortis again...and this is the routine. I had used Frontline Plus in the past but didn't like the greasy look and feel of her hair where it was applied. It took 3-4 days to go away. I also want 100% guarantee of protection regardless of how often she is in the water. Frontline is supposed to be waterproof but I somehow doubt it lasts 30 days. The only thing that Comforis and Sentinal don't protect against are ticks. We live by the ocean so it isn't a problem but when I take her into the mountains or to her doggie ranch when we travel, I then apply Frontline Plus to her. We seem to be totally free of all fleas and such. I never take her to a dog park and the other day we met Ned (Doodle) who was visiting San Diego at a dog park. I have bites on my legs up to my knees but Gracie is fine!!! Hey, can I take Comfortis????? lol
