Hi! My 11 month old doodle has had off and on explosive diarrhea since december. The vet did the parasite test many times and never found anything significant. She has also done blood work and had some test for her pancreas.... we still do not know whats wrong. She has been on metrozidizole 5 times and possibly another antibiotic also. They aslo gave her a de wormer as a precation. As of tonight she is on tylosin but it is the powder form and hard to get her to eat. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks! p.s.- Im losing my mind not knowing whats wrong with her!

At this point, I would strongly suggest that you consult a veterinary internal medicine specialist. I have a dog with several health issues, and with his GI disease, I was only able to get a diagnosis and a treatment plan after we saw a specialist. My regular vet also ran blood tests, fecal tests, took X-rays, etc and could not find the problem. The specialist ran other tests and had an answer in two days.

Tylosin powder is one of the bitterest tasting substances on earth. It's usually compounded for that reason, but compounding is very expensive. I do it myself with empty capsules and a small capsule filling machine purchased on-line for $15.

You can try mixing it with canned dog food or baby food.

Here is a link to the ACVIM website where you can locate a specialist in your area.

Wow thank you so much! This helps me out a lot!! So what is the GI disease your doodle has?

He has inflammatory bowel disease. It's an inflammation of the lining of the GI tract, it's immune mediated and incurable, but it is treatable.

Do you know if your dog's blood work included a GI panel? Did they test her B12 and folate levels? With all the bloodwork my regular vet did, they did not do those, and my guy had a B12 deficiency, which is one indication of a malabsorption disease. The blood panels usually have to be sent out, they are not usually done in house.

Im not sure what all the blood work included. It was done at the emergency vet at Texas a&M when she went in for vommiting a bunch one night. I have been trying to get a hold of the x rays, blood work, and fecal test results but they are not releasing them to me and keep just sending me a summary of what they did as her "records"... I will try again soon. I have been feeding her chicken and rice since about wednesday with a touch of chicken broth... for the most park she has been eating the powder tylosin when i mix it with that really well.... but shes only had the powder for the last 2 meals. I will begin to give her a bland dry diet i received from the vet... thats if she will eat it. She did not eat the I/D dry diet... I believe this one is the iams version of the prescription I/D diet. Im thinking of giving her the tylosin mixed into a chunk of wet I/D food when we start to feed her that diet? Do you think its ok to add a little chicken broth if she will not eat this other bland dry diet i will give her in a few days?

This is another reason that you really need to see a specialist. General practice vets recieve no training in nutrition in vet school  Hill's I/D is totally inappropriate for any dog with digestive problems, and is complete garbage.  We have lots of information about this in The Food Group. I strongly discourage you from feeding any kind of Rx foods. I would absolutely stick with the homecooked diet instead. Try giving her mashed sweet potaotes instead of rice with the chicken, and skip the broth, most canned broths have onions in them.

Is she getting any yogurt or probiotics?

Your vet did not run the kind of blood panel needed to diagnose a GI disease. The same thing happened to me. You need an IDEXX GI panel.

I was giving her forti flora for the past 10-15 days but i stopped giving it to her before i gave her the tylosin. I have heard forti flora isnt that great and it didnt really seem to do anything significant for heidi. I have heard about plain greek yogurt but I have not tried it yet... Im worried her good bacteria was destroyed in her intestines and isnt able to come back... Sorry i didnt answer your other question but yes when she was on metrazidizole (sorry for spelling mistakes) she was on the forti flora. When she was on metron. she did not have the runs at all but it always came back within about two weeks but for the last month it has been coming back a few days after the metron. dose ended.

That's typical. They are fine while on the metro, but then the diarrhea comes back when it's discontinued and their GI tracts are devoid of the good flora they need.

Fortiflora is garbage, but she does need some probiotics. Use plain unflavored fatfree yogurt for now, separated from the Tylosin and any other meds by at least two hours.

Proviable is a good probiotic for dogs. Also, iFlora. Either can be ordered on-line.

And there is a prebiotic called Gentle Digest by Ark Naturals that may help, too.

So i will give her food and tylosin around 7 and feed her the yogurt before bed.... I started to feed her later because awhile back she would do better eating a later dinner. Sound like a good approach?

That sounds good..  Do you still plan on seeing a specialist?  I really think its a good idea, b/c you want to make sure she does not have a malabsorption issue, or any other underlying cause... I will let you know how he does on one pill! And I agree with what you said before..I have gotten more info on DK, than I have from my vet!  You have come to the right place!

Yes I do plan on seeing a specialist but id like to wait a few weeks to  see how she does on tylosin. Iv just spent about $500 this month in vet bills etc... What exactly is malabsorption?

Here is a link that Karen once gave me..http://www.2ndchance.info/inflambowel.htm

Malabsorption is when a dog is unable to absorb nutrients.  I was always concerned with that b/c Woody would eat, then poop..ALOT, and almost immediately after eating, and his poop would look like his food..
