I've been giving my girls the Yummy Chummies Fish Oil the past several months but I noticed recently when I tried to reorder that everywhere seems to be either out of stock or what is available seems way over priced?  Can anyone recommend another fish oils and/or the evening primrose (brand specific).

Trying to help ease the compulsive itching/chewing.

The dosage isn't the same. Karen is better at that than I am. I do know that they get more than people do. You will have to look at the bottle, but most of those are 24 hour dosing. Benedryl is every 4-6 hours in people. I'm sure Karen will come along to tell you the deal!

Oh, and just in case that wasn't a typo, benedryl for dogs is 1mg/1Lb. They get twice as much as humans!

Dosage is not the same as for humans, and it varies depending on the dog's weight and which antihistamine it is. We did have a discussion here in this group years ago about the dosages of various antihistamines, and i know there is info on that online, i can try to find it.
I can tell you that with loratidine, (generic Claritin), a 47 lb dog should be getting two 10 mg tablets 1x/day.

Okay, cetirizine (Zyrtec) dosage for a 47 lb dog is 10 mg 2x/day.
The fexofenadine (Allegra) dosage is a bit confusing; it ranges from 1 mg to 2.5 mg per lb per day, so 47 to 117.5 mg per day!!!

Thanks Karen, wow the Allegra generic is confusing.  Allegra is what my doctors (primary and pulmonary) and pharmacy people all prefer.  I've never had luck with Zyrtec and they all said Claritin is old school (?) and really hasn't been updated so to avoid it?

All I can tell you is that Jack had the best results with Claritin, and it was recommended to me by his veterinary dermatology specialist. Remember, allergies symptoms in dogs are different than in people, and the effects of drugs are different, too. Just as your vet probably shouldn;t be giving you advice about how to treat your own allergies, your pharmacist and human MDs shouldn;t be giving advice on how to treat your dog's allergies, lol.

Benedryl is more 'sedating' than some of the second generation allergy meds.  I would compare prices between the human generic ingredients and price. We used generic Clariton and Zyrtec for Gordie as suggested by his Dermatologist vet.

I am curious why the dermatologists seem to leave Allegra out of the equation. I know I'm not a dog. But way back when I was struggling with living with a cat the allergists put me on Allegra-D (don't give the D to dogs) and it was amazing (and they were all prescription only back then!) For me at least Claritin and Zyrtec don't compare. Not even a little. I wonder if it is less effective for dogs for some reason? It would be my first line if I had to randomly choose.

They all work differently for different dogs, and some dogs do take Allegra with good results.

I tried all three with Ava and the only thing that we saw results from was the immunotherapy (and prednisone, but we didn't give that for allergies!)

thanks Stacey and Nancy.  For some reason my search engine isn't working not sure if its just me or of others are having the same issues.  When I type Itching in the top search section and submit I get a blank screen?
