I was wondering if anyone has had a dog with a liver shunt or could provide me with info regarding liver shunts?

A little background info, Bailey was diagnosed with HOD (bone disease) and has been in remission for 3 months now and hopefully it will not return!!

So a pre-op bloodwork (he was going into get neutered), Now may indicate there is a possibly he has a liver shunt. His bile acid levels came back and his results while he fasted was 100 and 242 after he ate protein!! From my understanding, the bile acid level should not be above 14.9. The next step will be an ultrasound to see if a shunt is present. We have gone to another vet to get a second opinion. She saw Bailey yesterday and was very alarmed that his urine was a brown color (he peed in her office). So she sucked up the urine into a syringe and had it tested. She took another blood test and will be getting back to us tonight or tomorrow with the results. I also provided her with Bailey's vet records from then previous vet.

I am freaking out! First Bailey goes through this awful bone disease and now he possibly has a shunt!? I am feeling like he just can't catch a break...poor pup!

Thank you for any info you can provide me!

I am so sorry for your loss and the pain you are feeling right now. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with you.
Melissa, I am so terribly, terribly sorry. My heart hurts for you and your sweet Bailey. Just know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I am so terribly sorry to hear your news. Bailey really did not much time ut I can tell you made that time as good as possible.

Melissa, I am so sorry.  I just saw this posting this morning for the first time, so didn't know what you were going through with Bailey.  You must be completely devastated.  Sending Doodle hugs....
I'm so sorry.

Thank you all so very much!

It has been a rough day today!  I keep thinking I hear his bark.  I am waiting for him to greet me when I come in the door.  I just plain miss him :(

Melissa I am so sorry for your loss, I am sending you doodle hugs and kisses and prayers. It's such a tough time dealing with the grief, Please know we are sending you loving thoughts,
So sorry for your loss :(

Although this was a very sad situation please note this post is over a year old. Melissa now has beautiful Wesley who should be almost a year old now.  As I am sure she still mourns her Bailey, check out her page and see the beautiful adjustments she and Wesley have made in their new lives.

Hope you do not mind me letting people know about the time frame of this post. Melissa, I am hoping all is well with you.   I lost a dog in January, and thought maybe I could just jump in here to help those who are just now seeing this.

Thanks for the update Joanne! I didn't even look at the date of the post!
Still I am sorry for Bailey and may he romp around in Heaven happy and healthy! Congratulations on Wesley hehe!

I agree,  Joanna.  I would not have looked at the date either, but I remember Melissa, Bailey, and then the welcoming of handsome Wesley.  Otherwise, I would have thought the same thing.

Still, I understand. For me, Starlit is sooooo fresh in my mind. I miss her dearly, even though I rarely say a word, I think of her everyday.  She is still in my heart even though photos of her fade from my page.

So, if others want to send comfort words to Melissa, time frames are never a factor.  Just saying  :)

Hugs Joanne... Starlit was so beautiful and I always remember her remarkable face when I see your comments on Dk. She's rompin around in those fluffy clouds too!
