Your puppy has giardia, which can be very difficult to get rid of. We have a lot of info here about this.
First of all, you always want Panacur, NOT metronidazole (Flagyl). it's more effective and has fewer side effects.
Second, you must clean and disinfect anything and everything that the poop may have touched, as they can get reinfected. Use wipes on your puppy's butt, pick up all poop immediately, and disinfect the area. You must also supervise your pup every single minute he is outdoors, and take him out on a leash to prevent him from eating anything or drinking from puddles.
Lastly, as Sandy mentioned, any time a dog is on Flagyl, they MUST be on a good probiotic. Flagyl kills all of the good bacteria needed for proper stool formation along with the bad. Do not buy Fortiflora from the vet. You want Proviable. If your vet doesn;t sell it, order it online. The Proviable must be given at least 2 hours apart from any meds, and longer is better. You must continue giving the probiotics for a couple of weeks.
Thanks Karen you’re always a huge help! I’ll be ordering the panacur and probiotics online
Karen so I ordered him the probiotics you suggested we just started those but the doctor gave him another 20 day of flagyl! I feel like its not helping help I think we're on day 9 or 10 of second round of flagyl I'm thinking of just stopping the antibiotics and doing a round of Pancur although im not sure for how many days and how much. What are your thoughts?
I'm sorry to hear this. I personally would never give metronidazole to any dog for any reason other than a serious GI disease. Did you ask the vet for Panacur instead? If not, I would.
Panacur is typically only given for 3-5 days. It does not cause the same kind of disruption of the gut flora as Flagyl, and studies have shown it to be more effective at clearing parasites.
No I didn't ask for it because they gave it to me as I was walking out and I was struggling with my toddler. Yes, this is the 3rd fecal exam they've done and it keeps coming back negative. He does have loose stools anymore but they're somewhat soft and I noticed yesterday as I picked it up that it had a jelly substance on it like mucous but no blood. I was going to order the Pancur from chewy as I heard its cheaper
I wasn't aware you could order Panacur without a prescription; but you may be able to have your vet fax or email one if it's required.
Also, have they run another fecal test?
