My Old chow chow Butter is now 14 years old. He was doing fine on Fromm, but lately his stool seems very loose. Once I put him on Rice and fish / Rice and chickem diet, his stool firm up, but back on kibbles, back to loose stool.
Do you think there is something else going on? Or his stomach has gotten very sensitive due to his age?
Is it OK to just feed him rice and fish / rice and chicken from now on?
During the last year of my poodle's life, (age 15) she culdn't tolerate any kind of kibble. It was just old age. She had terrible diarrhea, even with prescription food (I didn't know then what is in the Rx food from the vet) and medication for diarrhea. Nothing helped except plain hamburger and rice.
I believe that at this point, it would be okay to just feed Butter your chicken or fish and rice; I wouldn't worry too much about the vitamins he may be missing. Once his stomach has settled down, you can try adding vitamin supplements. Also green beans or carrots if he likes that. I stopped all commercial treats with my poodle and just gave baby carrots, which she loved. And you can try giving canned pumpkin if the stools get loose again.
I would also have the vet check a stool specimen for any parasites; older dogs are susceptible to worms again, just like puppies.
