So I’ve noticed in the last couple of days, Charlie will start hyperventilating when he gets too excited. It’s like when people have really bad cold and their noses are all stuck and can’t seem to breath.  He’ll be like that….it usually lasts for about 30 seconds to a minute or so.  He’s fine otherwise (no change in appetite or sleep pattern...other than trying to eat his bed).  The first couple of times it happened I thought he sniffed or swallowed something weird. This morning when I was dropping off him at the daycare, he had another one of those attacks, and one of the guys who was there said that his Shih Tzu does that too and it’s almost like a mini asthma attack because some dogs can get so excited they can’t breathe and you’re supposed to hold their chest cavity tight and it’ll help them through it.  And then he did that and it did help Charlie. I'm wondering if anyone else has heard of this or if their puppy suffers from the same, and if there's any way I can make it better for him?  Thanks.

My last dog, a miniature poodle, had this a lot. Some people call it "reverse sneezing", I think. In my poodle's case, it never caused her any harm, and she lived to be 16 years old, so I wouldn't worry about it. I never held her as the person at the daycare suggested, although i see no harm in that. I did speak to her calmly and soothingly when it happened and that seemed to help; I think anything that calms them down would help.

Calla has had episodes of reverse sneezing. I didn't connect it with this post. My vet and I associated it with allergies and it is extremely infrequent since she's been on Evening Primrose Oil. It does sound like she's dying when it happens but she doesn't seem upset.

Our Megan does this too. She is five and if she gets very excited she may wheeze.  We just pat her side and talk calmly and she is ok.  Not a worry according to the vet

My Shih Tzu does this and it has been more frequent as she gets older. She is 8 now, but has done it since about 2 years old. Willy has never had the problem and I understood that it was short nasal passages, like pugs, pekes and Shih Tzus.
Other than 'reverse sneezing' being more often, it has not been a problem health wise for LiLi and she has never been to the vet with any illness.

My sisters Maltese does this.  I think she called it a collapsed trachea.  She's 9 years old and is totally fine after a minute of honking
