Does anyone know if you can buy tylan powder OTC? I’d like to try it for Yeti’s diarrhea issue he had been having, but I’m not sure where to get it.

It used to be available without prescription, but a couple of years ago, that changed, and you do now need a prescription from your vet. I ordered it from Foster & Smith, and they then faxed or emailed my vet for the prescription.

Boooo :( I was afraid this was going to be the case. I just want to try it to see if it helps.

Hey Karen! I was wondering if you would recommend buying gel capsules to put the tylan powder into. I’ve been reading about it and I know it’s pretty nasty stuff. I want to be prepared if yeti won’t eat it with his usual food.

We filled our own capsules; I bought vegetarian capsules, because gelatin capsules contain beef, and JD was allergic to it. I bought this inexpensive capsule filler: http://www.lifeextension.com/Vitamins-Supplements/item17202/The-Cap...

What complicates this though is that what size capsules you buy/use depends on the dosage of Tylan. JD was on an eighth of a teaspoon twice a day, which translated to size "0" capsules.
You can also order Tylan in capsules, already filled, from a compounding pharmacy, but that gets really price-y.

I do know of some people in my IBD dogs group who said they just mixed the powder into some kind of wet food and the dog ate it, but that wasn't an option for me.

I order my Tylan capsules from Wedgewood Pharmacy online and they ship them to me.  If you are interested I can share the info....you would need to have your vet fax a prescription.
