Does your Doodle get white slime in it's eyes? What do you do about it? Any information is welcome.

My Toby runs after balls and frisbie's in the yard, there is some dirt without grass and dust flies. Occasionally he gets this white "stuff" in his eyes. You can wipe it away with a tissue, very carefully of course, and I took him to the vet to ask about it.She said it could be caused by many things, dog looking out open car window, dust from ball playing, etc. She said to use liquid tears often and then if he gets the goo, to use any type of Visene. The liguid tears I wasn't worried about burning or anything. However, I would really like to hear if anyone here has done it and if it didn't seem to hurt them. I would just HATE IT if I hurt him and I do not really know how to deal with it if it does burn (flushing eyes with water would be pretty difficult). I feel a like a trader to my vet by asking you all, but I am just double checking.

From everything I have read, do not use Visine in your dogs eyes. Plain Saline solution is safe and what is recommended to keep in a dog first aid kit. My two get the white slime in the eyes off and on all year long depending on what is blooming or what they have gotten into :) I am constantly wiping eye boogers, slimy or dried out of the corner of eyes.
I was just looking Visine in dogs up. The major concern is that it could cover up a more serious condition. If your vet has just examined the dog and recommended it, then it should be OK. I would think an anti allergy drop might be more effective. My dogs also get brownish goop daily, not a lot but some. I just wipe it off once or twice a day and ignore it til the next time.
tori get this every once in a while too, but I wipe it with a tissue and she's usually ok... but she does get eye crusts often that need to be soaked off. sometimes they can be a bit smelly. I'll be watching to see what everyone says!
BTW ~ Toby is so cute!
Thank you for all your advice. Like your dogs, Toby always has some eye junk which I gently remove with a wet wash cloth, no soap. He shuts his eyes so tight, that putting in the liquid tears is quite a trick. I try to gently pull out the bottom eyelid and drop in there, so not right on where he looks out.. seeing this thing coming. I'm not using the regular visine...When I had allergy eyes, it burned mine. If this gets greenish, to the vet I go (I had asked for another little tube of what I used last year when this happened, but that had gone from 40.00 to 150.00!!!! A vet appt for them to apply it has to be cheaper than that! But, of course, his eyes are terribly important, and I would never risk them.
I once took a puppy to the vet at UC Davis for an eye issue and they squirted saline solution into his eye! I thought that might hurt but it didn't...and it is something I do quite often now. It cleans the eye of any dust or pollen that gets into his eye and then I wipe the outside with a clean white gauze pad.
You can also get terramycin ointment if you think you need an antibiotic: http://www.google.com/products?q=terramycin&rls=com.microsoft:e... You just pull the bottom eyelid down to expose the third eyelid and put a line of this salve in the eye. It is quite soothing for the dog.
My goldendoodle get a white or yellow covered goo in her eyes that I wipe off at least twice a day. Some days it is worse than others. I've concluded she has allergies as when she was younger she developed a sneeze that the vet said was allergy related. We used benadryl on her for about a week and it cleared up (the sneezing). Liquid tears sounds like it would be less irritating to the dog, but shouldn't they also have an allergy eye drop for canines? I use an over the counter eye drop when my eyes get really bad with itching from allergies.
