Goldendoodles aren't typically $2000+ -- Goldendoodles tend to be $1200-1500....MAYBE $1800.But 2,000 plus is usually the price for an Australian Labradoodle. YES it's worth signing up for IDOG and Doodle Rescue!!! Wanting a puppy doesn't go against rescue when puppies end up in rescue :-) But if you make a big deal about the money being your main reason they might dislike you ;-) -- but only because they really want to be sure that whoever adopts a dog/pup from them is prepared in every way including financially. So they don't want people to 'bargain hunt' a rescue dog because it is entirely likely that a rescue PUPPY comes from a puppy mill or other poor quality breeding situation. Because of this, it is more likely that the pup might have inherited health issues that are costly. Not necessarily, but more likely. So they just want to know that anyone who wants to adopt isn't merely adopting due to financial constraints as they worry that such a constraint may mean the dog may become too expensive. That's the basic gist of it.
Otherwise, MOST goldendoodles are the lighter color so it's very possible the goldendoodle you'll find is cream. Now as to 'English' -- that's mostly marketing. Yes there are some blockier, stockier goldens, but overall once you mix that dog with a poodle...there's no guarantee what you'll get is the 'blocky' genes in every pup. Plus with all the doodle fur they all look kinda fluffy and thus blocky anyway.
You mentioned you wanted a retriever and your wife wanted a poodle. Again with a mix you really don't know which retriever genes and which poodle genes you'll get so be open to either a labradoodle or goldendoodle...you really can't always tell which is which most of the time.
