Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

As Blake is a rescue and probably of indescriminate breeding, I have concerns about the health issues associated with the miniature poodle more than the Lab.

A few common disorders are listed below:

Cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy that may cause eventual blindness. Very common in Miniature Poodles.

Allergies and skin conditions such as Sebaceous Adenitisare are common with Poodles of all sizes but seem to effect miniatures more frequently.

Runny eyes and ear infections are also common.

Luxating Patella - dislocation or slipping of the kneecap.

Von Willebrand's Disease-an inherited bleeding disorder.

Epilepsy

Cushings Disease - adrenal and pituitary disorder.

Addison's Disease-or hypoadrenocorticism.

Jacquie, I can't imagine how anyone could give Blake up, he's adorable and it's so wonderful that you rescued him. I guess one of the drawbacks is not knowing his complete health history. (It's one of the main reasons I got Finn - my first dog, from a reputable breeder). That said, I guess every breed is prone to it's health issues regardless of where an individual came from, and there's always an element of luck involved. The way I look at it is this: In addition to what the breeder could offer, I also offer (and this would apply to a rescue equally), love, a healthy life-style, a good diet and health insurance. With that in place, it's my intention to simply enjoy him day by day and not worry about what might be. If I worried about all the things above, in addition to worrying he'll get attacked by a dog, eaten by a bear, choke on a toy, get bloat, get fox-tails, or goodness knows what else, I'd be a nervous wreck!
I asked to see a copy of the health certificates for the parents of my pup and the breeder was shocked I asked. She told me that no one had ever asked before. So I am just supposed to believe anything someone says!?
