Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi all -

Hoping to get your advice.  So we found a mini goldendoodle F1 that we think we are adopting but wanted to get your thoughts on the coat.  I am looking for a coat that is silky and soft, more on a similar to the golden retriever and not as much of thicker poodle coat - based on the picture can anyone help me figure out which coat this little baby has?

Also she is currently 7.5 weeks and already weights 8 pounds - wondering if you all think she is going to be much bigger than 35 pounds?

other that she is perfect and love everything else - I think she is very sweet and sounds perfect.

thank you again all in advance,

Linda

Linda, I think the F1's are hard to predict. Izzy had lots of hair and looked like her siblings, then she lost her hair:) At almost 8 months old she is starting to get most of her hair back. I call her a "work in progress". Her coat is definitely more like a golden retriever but we really had no way to predict this. When we chose Lucca we were told to look at the undercoat. I wanted more of a retriever coat for both so we knew we didn't want a thick undercoat. But Lucca kept his hair and pretty much had his full coat by 8 months. Izzy's will take longer:) No matter what they are incredible wonderful dogs and no matter what coat she has she will be great. Lucca weighed around 10 lbs at 8 weeks and is now 44 lbs at 2 1/2 years old. Izzy was 12 1/2 lbs at 8 weeks and at 8 months she is 40 lbs!!! Again, Lucca's litter of 9 (we know 6 of them) all range from 30-45 lbs.So it's unpredictable.

Good luck to you

I agree it's hard to tell. My Rags F1 is the size of an adult poodle. The breeder should have some thoughts on the size especially if she has breed the mother before and she knows how large the pups grew.
I don't know anything about F1's but she sure is cute.

That is a very nice F1! Cute!

It is so hard to predict from puppy looks and weights--you need to look at the parents, really. In the litter my LD had, I chose the smallest pup to keep and he is now one of the biggest and is almost 25 pounds at 5 months. I thought he would weigh 35 -40 and he might. They slow down SOONER if they are going to be smaller, but at the beginning there is not much difference in their size. You need to find out the parents and grandparents sizes and even then, you are going to be + or - 10 pounds, The ears look wavy and the coat looks a bit coarse--these could mean a slightly curlier coat but not a super-soft one.

I agree that an F1 is iffy to predict.  I included a pic of my bff's and my doods.  They are both minis about a month apart in age.  They were bought from entirely different breeders, in different states.  Gracie on the left grew to be 30 lbs and is soft and fluffy, non shedding.  She is curly when not blown out though.  Cooper on the right grew to look like a miniture golden retreiver, long, courser hair, no real curl, shedding and 45 lbs!   So you never know.  You will love whatever you get in the long run!

F-1's are difficult to predict.  Our breeder told us Banjo would maybe grow to 30-32lbs.  He is 46 lbs!   As for the coat it is difficult to know the end result.  Banjo is a very light shedder, does not mat.  His coat is quite easy to care for.

Your pup is gorgeous!

They are hard to predict size wise also.  Her coat looks like one of my dogs sister at the same age and she is silky soft, yours may have curlier ears.  Also at eight weeks my "mini" doodle weighed 4.40 pds and she is currently 30 pds.  Her sister was 6.0 pds at eight weeks and is 35 pds/  Again it is so hard to judge.  But know this, you will love this breed no matter the size or hair type.  They are so sweet and loving and just looking at them makes me smile.  Good luck with your new puppy.

Luna was about that size at 7.5 weeks, and she is now 35 pounds (more or less fully grown - 9 months).   However, other people on here have had standard doodles who weighed less at 8 weeks and are now giants.

As for the coat - it looks like that pup will likely have quite a wavy usual "doodle" coat.  A pup without the "frizzies" around the eyes and without a beard will likely look more like a golden retriever (like Luna).   The texture of the coat is almost impossible to predict in an F1 - Luna started with a straight, light apricot coat... and now (growing in her adult coat) it looks like it will be a mix of cream/red hairs in a soft wool texture with a slight wave (no curls).  We won't know for sure for about 6 months-1 year what her final coat will be.

I know it's nice to know what the coat will look like at the end, but honestly you will love her so much you won't care :)  I actually find Luna's coat changes quite interesting and exciting.

HI Linda,

Unfortunately it's so hard to predict....my Charlie who is a mini Golden Doodle came home at 9 weeks and 12 lbs and he's 3 1/2 now and weighs 50lb....his sisters and brother all weigh under 40 lbs.  He also did not lose any hair at 8 months like all his sisters and brothers and has kept the Retriever hair, not poodle.  Hope this helps.

She looks lovely.  We are first time doodle owners, so don't have any advice on the coat.  Our first priority for our dogs has always been personality/temperament.  So, I'd say, ask the breeder for her input and if you love the temperament and everything else is what you are looking for, go for it!

What a cute baby!  He looks kinda like Charlie before.  Charlie had more curls on his face, back and feet when he was younger.  He's at 10 months now and started losing his puppy coat about two months ago.  Now I've noticed that he's definitely more golden retriever like, in term of his coat and tempermant.
