Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We picked up our "mini" multiple-gen labradoodle yesterday! We're in love! Last week our breeder sent us his last picture and said the males in this litter were trending larger than in the past. His father is a 25 lb mini poodle and his mom is a 38 lb multiple-gen labradoodle. Quincy at 91/2 weeks is already a whopping 15 pounds! Will I end up with a standard sized doodle or large medium?

Don't you just love being a doodle 'mom'!

Magic was about that weight when we picked him up - now he is 2yrs and 33 pounds (17") and a perfect medium bundle of love! His mom was standard....and his dad was a mini poodle - so I can't see your pup getting to be a large medium. But there are experts here.....they will let you know - just wanted to say.......'gorgeous puppy!!!!'

Thanks Cynthia! Magic is the perfect size and a real cutie! I'd be thrilled if Quincy turns out like Magic.
Hi Cynthia - I'm a breeder of minis and mediums and just got a standard puppy - at 5 months she weighs 41 pounds and stands 21 inches to give you a comparison.  We have had some puppies shoot up larger than we expected.  Even out of two minis we get an occasional medium.  That can come from the grandparents.  How tall are your puppy's parents?  I would say he will end up in the medium range, it would be very very unusual to have a standard from the two sizes you described.  Almost impossible unless a grandparent was a standard.  A good rule of thumb, double the weight at 4 months.  After 7 months of age you could add another couple inches in height as well, but probably not more than that.  Hope that helps!  And he sure is cute, looks like a fun boy.

Hi Amy,

Thanks for your reply.  I just found out from the breeder that my multi-gen is really a F1B!  Anyway, the dad is 25 pounds and 16 inches.  The mom is 38 pounds and 23 inches - her grandfather was 26 inches don't know his weight.  I'm a little disappointed that what I requested on my application is NOT what I received.  Of course, we've already fallen in love with him! Now I'm just hoping my son's allergies won't be affected and we don't end up with a huge dog.

Monica, your pup is so beautiful and of course you're in love...but I have to ask...how could your breeder NOT know the pup she was keeping for you was not an ALD????  I would be upset knowing there were allergies in the family of which to be cncerned!!

I know, right?!  In my application I requested a mini multi-gen because of my son's allergies.  I also stated I needed a really laid back dog because my son ADHD and I could not handle a hyper dog as well.  The only thing I could think is that she has had such success with her labradoodles being allergy friendly that she was focusing on his personality more.  With that said....we've had some disconnects as to who the mom and dad were and then the size.  The fact of the generation never came up and as of this morning I still thought he was a multi gen until I emailed her question his generation for our vet appointment this morning. UGH!

She is a big breeder that deals with so many dogs and people I guess she's starting to get a little mixed up.  She has been featured on Animal Planet's designer dogs 101 on Labradoodles and Cavachons.

All in all this dog is great and seems PERFECT for us but the communication was def lacking.

I sent her an email questioning my app not matching what we rec'd so I'm waiting for her response.

do you now have your pup in your possession???  He's such a cutie ...and of course...you won't be able to exchange!  I just pray he does not shed!!!
Yes, we picked him on Saturday.  He is such a sweet, sweet boy.  I know, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that his adult coat won't shed.  So far we have no problems....let's hope they stay that way :-)
Wow, Monica, we are in the same boat! Son (now 12) with ADHD and asked for mellow pup, too! So far so good. With our training he has been wonderful, and my son who is so impulsive is totally tolerated by this amazing pup! Honestly the dog has responded to training better than the kid, lol! Good luck n keep in touch if you want to vent/reach out... Best,...just realized your post is from 2011, oops! ;)
Hi Cindy,
Thanks for your reply. Quincy is now 3 1/2 years old and weighs 60 lbs and ended up being a F1B. Lucky for us he does not shed one bit and has turned out to be the best dog ever. I know everyone with a doodle says that but we also just got a mini goldendoodle and I can honestly say our Labradoodle is much smarter. He was house trained in 2 weeks, knows all commands and is the most mellow dog I've ever seen. Sometimes I think he is more slug than dog lol
Charmin our Goldendoodle will be 16 weeks tomorrow and is finally getting that he needs to do his business outside. He still has some accidents if we don't watch him like a hawk.

My son was only 8 years old when we got Quincy and now I'm so glad that he is 60 lbs. my son tends to love on him too much and puts all of his weight on the poor dog and Quincy doesn't move a muscle. The breeder did give us the best dog for our household I just wish she would have been honest and tell us he is more of a standard size vs mini but he is just what you need. :-)

My son, Nicholas, is now 11 years old and has matured somewhat and is more experienced now with dogs and he is very gentle with the puppy. We just have to keep reminding him that he can't leave his stuff all over the place because the puppy will get it. Charmin is also adjusting pretty well to our household (lots of raised voices due to the ADHD). Some days are more challenging than others but we get through them.
Nicholas just started private school for kids with ADHD and I noticed there is a lot less stress and anxiety on all of us.

I'm sure your son and pup will be best buds for a long time. Getting a dog was the best thing we could have done for our family.
Thanks so much for your kind response. I am glad to hear it is working out for you and your family. It is going pretty well here, too, especially when my son learned to "let sleeping dogs lie" recently. I'm so glad school has started just so that we can have more of a regular routine, which I find helps all of us. I noticed that the special needs site on this group gets little or no action, unfortunately. I'd love to hear more about training pups AND special needs kids, lol! BTW, I friended you, whatever that means! Best to you all,

Hi Cindy,

I see you're from NJ.  I was born and lived NJ until we moved to Raleigh (with my husband's job) 9 years ago.  There's so much I miss about NJ like family, friends and the great food!  Raleigh is so beautiful though and we can keep pansies year round.  I love that we get 4 seasons but the winters are much milder and for the most part, no snow (well once in a great while but it never lasts more than a day or two)

I know what you mean about school starting and getting back into a routine.  This is the first time in a long time that we are back on a traditional school calendar.  We used to be at a year round school where kids went to school for approx 9 weeks then had off 3 weeks.  They did this in a lot of schools in Wake county because of the growth in population.  they just couldn't build or fund more schools.  By having year round (4 tracks but only 3 are on at one time) they could accommodate about 350 more students.  So now we all have to get used to this new routine.

Have a great day,

Monica
