Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I take my 2 doodles to the dog park almost every day. Yankee is 2 yrs old and Finn is 9 months. They get jealous when the other plays with another dog. How do I stop this? If Finn plays with another dog, Yankee lies in wait and when he's done, he pounces on Finn and lays a beating on him. He doesn't hurt him but he does get rough. Finn usually knows it's coming and tries to find a tree to hide behind.

When Yankee plays with another dog, Finn bites at him the whole time. I've tried holding Finn back but it's difficult.

Is there anything I can do to stop these behaviours?

Thanks
Linda

Interesting topic - I don't know what you could do to stop this. Maybe they will grow out of it? Finn is still a young pup!!!
Have you tried having one on a leash and letting the other play for a while, then switch. Let the leashed watch the other play while you have them secured with you giving them love and attention. It wont be too difficult to hold Finn back on leash while Yankee plays, and you can have Yankee on leash when Finn plays. When Finn is done playing you can stop the pouncing buy Yankee because he is leashed, and let them go play togehter when he has calmed dowm.
I have actually held onto Yankee for awhile after Finn is done playing. Sometimes he lets it go and other times, he jumps Finn anyways. That isn't too bad. I never know when Yankee will decide to play with another dog so Finn starts biting him right away. I try to grab him but it's hard. I could probably hold him till Yankee is done playing but it's not pleasant. He whines, barks and pulls like crazy.
Is the pouncing really aggressive or is it more "play fighting". My dogs also seems to be jealous when one of them plays with another dog, and Groucho Too always starts a play fight with Hondo afterwards. Sometimes they just spontaneously start a play fight out on the deck when there are no other dogs around. I think it is more just the message, "You belong to me" and they get excited when there is another dog around. My dogs would never fight with another dog but they frequently play fight with each other.
My two play fight all the time too but when Finn has played with another dog, Yankee is much rougher. It does seem to be the message that you are mine.
I haven't noticed Kona mind when Buddy is playing with someone else, but she is funny when he stalks another dog and pounces unfairly. She actually protects the other dog!

Because of the size difference of my two, I usually will ask Buddy to come sit by me if he joins in and is being a little rough or barking incessantly while Kona is playing with a dog at the park. I can't stand that constant barking, I know he is saying come play with me instead of her, but jeez, I can only stand so much..... If he doesn't listen to me, I will take him by the collar and make him sit by me till Kona is done playing. He get's better each time and is learning what I want from him in these situations.

I have three Goldendoodles. My 90 lb Harlee & Little Buddy are very respectful of each other. But the exception to the rule is Chloe whom I am continually on for grabbing necks. She is trying to be top gal and I will not allow her to be. She also gets really rough. I grab her by the ruff of her neck when in reach and this is her correction. It takes time to get through their head that we are Alpha! Stay with it until they get it. It is never easy when you have a pack of dogs. When you see him laying for her, step up and stop it before it excelerates and break his concentration. Either with a ball or whatever. Show him you dissaprove of that behavior. ( Leave it) is usually what command I give. The sad part with three she grabs Harlee by the neck and Li'l Bud grabs Chloe by a back leg. Just step in and watch for signals from the one that attacks his buddy! Then I have two to correct. Over one of my dogs bad behavior. Good Luck Bev, Harlee, Miss Chloe & Li'l Buddy
HI Linda,

Saw your post and had a good laugh because I so remember Yankee doing that to Finn. Is it any better now that he's a bit older.....I'm still scared of getting that second dog because of this jealous problem, you know Charlie, he doesn't like me or you petting another dog....
