I am thinking of switching my 31/2 month old puppy to Acana grain free food. I was wondering if the protein content is too high for puppies?  Does anyone else feed that food with good results???

I'm interested to see what people say about this.  I was planning to feed my puppy the Orijen and I believe that has an even higher protein content than the Acana.  Thanks for starting this topic!  :)

I am curious to hear what others have to say too.

Several months ago, I decided to switch my puppy (7 mos old at that time) to Before Grain Chicken which is 55% chicken, chicken meal & turkey meal; 38% fruits, veggies, vitamins & minerals; and 7% fat & Salmon Oil - 0 grain.  He loves it and gobbles it down dry, but he has twice as much poop and also seems to have a lot of gas when eating this product.  Since he doesn't seem to mind the Wellness Puppy 5, I decided to leave him on it.  I am curious to see what others are feeding their puppies.

I know that Acana makes a large breed puppy formula but the pet store said that the wild prairie was better and an "all stages" food. I am switching because he has had very loose stools on the Wellness large breed puppy. My gut tells me that grain free will be best for him....just worried about too much protein for such a large puppy. 30 pounds at 31/2 months!!

We switched Chester to Acana Large Breed Puppy from Orijen Large breed Puppy at 5 months. He had a bout of loose stools and when we took him to the vet we had to fast him and slowly transition him back on food- so I wanted a little less protein kibble. (I think he got into compost or bad water..he was put on Metronidazole)

The Acana Lrg Breed - isn't grain free-has steel cut oats.  I did get an all stages Acana that is grain free- still unopened.

He is doing really well on the Acana- He did well on the Orijen too but he did Scratch a lot which he isn't so much now.. I don't know what the cause of that was- but it does seem to be in line with the food switch.

He seems to really like the Acana- sometimes with the orijen we had to coax him to eat. He is just shy of 6 months and weighing in at 52 Lbs..

I also meant to say that there is a list on the food group of suggested foods..Acana/ Orijen are made by the same company.

So far so good! Tucker is loving the Acana - Wild prairie and his stools have been perfect. He actually gobbles it down so fast that he seems to be begging for more. I spoke with another pet shop owner and she assures me the all stages food is fine for such a young pup.
Yay Tucker! I am glad to hear he is liking the Acana. It really is an excellent kibble.

When Bailey was alive, he really liked the Acana Grasslands. But he had so many unusual health problems, like a bone growth problem and liver problem, so we had to reduce the amount of protein he was consuming. The Acana is an All Life Stages kibble, so there should be no problem with him eating the kibble.

I think this is a good question to ask the Food Group.  They are a wealth of information and had helped me with getting Bailey started on his kibble (started with Royal Canin, then we switched to Acana and ended up with Fromm Four Star Nutritionals) and we will be starting Wesley with the Fromm Four Star Nutritionals Chicken A La Veg.

Some dogs do well on grain free and some dogs do well with healthy grains.

I highly recommend you ask the Food Group. They have created a list of recommended brands and Acana is definitely one of those brands!

Hope that helps!

My puppy is 10 weeks old and had been on Puppy Chow. I asked my vet about switching to Orijen Puppy 80% protein and he said that is the food he recommends. I did specifically ask about the protein content because it is so dramatically different from Puppy Chow and the vet said just switch him slowly.

Chester has been switched from Acana Large Breed Puppy (With healthy grains) to a grainfree Acana Grasslands (All life stages).

He is 6 months. He has been on it a few weeks and his stools have been really firm and dark.

He is doing Excellent- I wanted to switch to the all life stages - as it is grain free, and there is more variety in flavours.
